Heating Alternatives

rantcaseyisgod Mar 12, 2009 08:38 PM

I'm looking for advice on alternative ways to heat a terrarium. Both of my current set ups are glass acquariums with screen tops (undertank heat mats & over head heat lamps).

I'm considering upgrading to a fully enclosured terrarium with glass/plexiglass/whatever windows that open in the front. Given that I don't want to spend money on a radiant heat panel, what other options do I have?

Is Flexwatt a versatile way to heat a terrarium of that type? Perhaps stick some on the bottom, maybe some on one side and/or on top of the cage for added heat?

Any other alternatives?

Thanks,
-----

Adam - heating is going to be different for different animals, but I will say that glass is a horrible insulator. As a result, the glass you have on your cage - the more obsticles you will have to face trying to keep the proper conditions.

I know this, hence why I'm asking about alternative heating for complete enclosures - for example, Boaphile and Repti-Rack type enclosures which are made from durable plastics.

I have a lot of used Neos, and other than the glass fronts, I use flexwatt under all of them, but just the 10" width so there's a gradiant.
