Beginner Tortoises

CrazyForHerps Mar 13, 2009 01:00 AM

I think tortoises are the cutest things ever, but I don't really know anything about them. I was preparing to do research last night, but I realized I don't know what kinds of tortoises to research.

As a complete beginner with tortoises, what are some good breeds to research? I will do all the research I have to, plus more, but I need a place to start. Give me some names and I'll do the rest.

Thanks!

Consider getting a redfoot or yellowfoot tortoise. You would definately be pleased with the ease of care and they are a terrific species.

Kudos to you for doing the research before you purchase this very long term commitment. Consider your climate, you may find a species that comes from a similar climate and therfore easier to keep. It is not so easy to make a tropical environment when you live in a very cold area for example. I think "Russians", Greeks from European locales, and Marginateds, Herrmann's are good choices for beginners, they have outgoing personalities and eat a wide variety of easy to get foods, manageable size. Some tortoises are prettier, but not as easy keepers... If you live in a dry Southern desert, captive bred/permitted desert tortoises are fun. Good luck and let us know how it goes. Try to contact a tortoise club and see what the experienced keepers in your area have to say. Take your time and get a healthy one! Buy captive bred and sometimes the breeder will be your consultant for life. Vic
