Snake ID - kind of!

jamerbuddy Mar 13, 2009 02:36 PM

Hopefully this question isn't too dumb. Do any of you happen to know the species of the tri-color shown with the Kingsnake.com logo? It looked more Milk than King to my untrained eye, but wanted to find out once and for all. My wife finally agreed to let me get a snake, and as discussed in a previous thread here, I am leaning toward a milk. I really like the completely black face of the one in this photo.

Thanks for your help!

Jamison

The so-called California or Sierra Mountain Kingsnake (Lampropeltis zonata) is gracing the kingsnake.com logo. That particular species is often characterized by a black face/snout.

There are several species of Milk Snake (Lampropeltis triangulum) which have fully black faces, too, but most have some sort of light markings on their snout.

That one is a hotty!!

Nice snake cole, so what are you pairing that baby up with? Show us some photos!

That little girl is still a year away from production, though she's pushing 20". I figured one more year of solid growth should do wonders for her... and the rest of that colony!

Here's a male from the same group. This photo's old and the animal is much larger, now - but not any less stunning.

I'm not one for waiting so this pair will have to do. I will expect them tues.

Thanks for the quick response. I figured it would be a little confusing to use a Milksnake photo for "kingsnake.com", but I'm more familiar with mountain kings with many more bands, so assumed it was a Milk. You'd think it would be a very subtle detail, but for some reason I REALLY like the looks of a completely black face, which is why it will likely take me much longer than I wish to wait to get a snake, since like you said, most sem to have lighter facial markings. I guess when you ONLY get one, you have to be picky. That said, however, I do really like your pics. That's a looker for sure. I do apologize for posting in the milk snake forum.

No need to be sorry - most of us love all tricolors!

i dont like the all black heads.I like the red, black and white.

I will tell you this, make sure you get one that eats well on ft(frozen thawed ) because some can be very picky eaters.

I always tell people to consider a corn snakes as a first snake because they eat so well and grow fast.

Mexican milks usually have a dark head with minimal light on the face.
