Alt UVB lighting solution & rack UVB?

Omnivorous Mar 13, 2009 05:11 PM

My animals dont "require" UVB lighting but I have also been told there may be some benefit to letting them have UVB lighting. My cages are set up like a rack in that they are all stacked so its like a wall of cages. They get some sunlight but its not direct sunlight.

I was wondering if this would work and give them some UVB loveing as an alternative to purchaseing a lot of fluorescent fixtures and installing them in all my tanks as they dont require the light. If I took either a couple long fluorescent UVB fixtures or a couple adjustable incandescent light fixtures and put them on so the light was pointed at the tanks would that give them some UVB or would it not really do much? I wouldnt put it too close more like trying to get a few fixtures to spread the light over all the tanks so they get some UVB but not heat. Acrylic or Glass viewing areas. I am not sure if that would get through and give them a little UVB or its not close enough and they wont really get any.

Also I was just wondering what do people do that have rack systems/setups for animals that require UVB lighting? Do you just have to get a bunch of fixtures and make the rack larger?

The uvb would not get through the glass or plastic, even mesh or screening really cuts down on the amount that is allowed to pass through. Are these fish tanks or cages that you have? For all my cages they all have their own fixture and bulbs inside the cage. For tubs or tanks I would hang shop lights above them with no top on them if you can house your animals that way? What kind are we talking about housing anyway?
