This answer depends on physical factors and phylosophical inclinations...what it takes to survive may differ from what it takes to thrive and provide quality of life. For adults, many of us think bigger is better, and long cages make it easier to provide a thermal gradient. Many keepers seem to like 6'L x 2'W x 18" ht, and animals seem to do well. Other set ups work also, but I like long ones, as it is fun to watch them crawl around, utilize the choices you provide etc., all easier to do if the cage is at least this size. I know of healthy appearing animals in smaller set ups, but I would suggest a minimum of 12 sq. ft. of floor space. These snakes move around, and they seem to enjoy stretching out and you will want to see them. good luck, Vic
