Hey.
Thanks for the great reply.
I have another couple of questions for you if I may.
the first one: how warm should I allow the hottest spot to be?
and how cold should there be on the "cold spot"?
And now for the last question: were should I place the
"bathtub"? in the warm end or the cold end? maybe something in between? right now the water temp. is around 77F. is this to cold?
I am very thrilled that I have found this forum, so big thumbs up to the guys taking the time helping others.

best regards

Dan,
. I think that the warm end needs to be in the low 80s and the cool end in the mid to high 70s. An ideal cage would be long enough that it had a warm end at 85 and a cool end at 75 with plenty of intermediate areas in betweeen. Most cages are too short to achieve this though. Watch your snake and where it spends most of it's time for clues about what temperature it prefers. They usually spend 5 to 8 days in the warm part of the cage after they eat and afterwards spend more time moving around the cage. I would put the water on top of the warm area so that it will evaporate and add humidity to the cage. I would guess that with water temp of 77 the snake may soak occasionally but not for long periods of time.

Hey Jeff once again thanks for the great answer!
the bath is about 77F. and both snakes have been in the water for almost two days now. I am starting to get a little worried about them. Is this normal?

Dan,
. Many Rainbows do spend alot of time in their water bowl. It is usually not a problem. BUT, There are problems that might cause a snake to spend too much time in the water. If the overall cage temperature is too hot or too cold the water bowl may be the closest temperature to what the snake wants and so it will spend lots of time soaking in the bowl. If the cage is too dry the snake may spend lots of time in the water bowl. Snakes with mites will often soak in their water bowl. Snakes that have no good places to hide in their cages may spend time in the water bowl trying to hide.
