LOST AN EASTERN IN MY CAR

MARK FARRELL Mar 15, 2009 10:59 AM

Just a reminder on how tricky snakes can be. I did an education program Friday. Neglected to close all the tank clips on my 5 yr old eastern milk cage. Put it in the back seat of my car fro the 10 minute drive home. Got home. - snake gone. I'm sure into the back seat. Temps here in NY over night were in the 20's so, I suspect my Eastern probably froze under the seat. This sucks. Purely my fault. We look every day, but without pullingthe seats out I doubt the snake will find its way out
Another lesson learned - 3 lost snake in 30 years - 1st in a car

No, south Fl but I've been up there more than down here the last few months. Lynbrook, Queens, and Staten Island. Some fun, some not so fun.

snake_bit Mar 16, 2009 12:34 AM

Do you know that Staten Island used to have milk snakes that were as red as the ones in NJ.It may have been part of the temporalis range.I wish someone still had these.

lost a stuarti in my car once, year old, nice size, temps outside were into the upper 90's outside...cas we know are alot hotter.......week after losing it I popped the trunk open at the feed store...guy says "oh you got one here" I asked "one what"...as I grabbed the snake just laying in the middle of the trunk all rolled up , like nothing was wrong....he was fine.....

they can get into the trunk, dash, seat, outside through a few places.......keep looking.....I wouldn't ruin a car for it....

good luck.......I lost just a few snakes over the years that I never found.....3 were easterns.....1 was a little shovelnosed....

I actually lost an eastern in my car once too. I found it a few days later in the glove box. I didn't have anything to put it in since I found it while on a trip so I zipped it up in a pocket and it managed to get out of that somehow without pushing the zipper open. I've checked that pocket many times and I swear there are no holes in the seams...

Someone else I know lost a snake in his car and after finally finding a mechanic willing to help him look for it they took off all the panels and removed the seats etc. They ended up finding the snake coiled up behind the speedometer. There is no place in a car that a snake can't get to.

If it's cold out, try putting some sort of heat source in the car with something it can hide in. If the snake finds it, it's likely to stay and you're likely to find it there in the morning.

good thinking.maybe a hand warmer thing in a small box.

Hey - I think I'll give the hand warmer thing a shot. i'm hoping it's not to late. It's been cold. Plus we have been driving the car. I'm hoping the snake didn't get fryed too?

FOUND THE SNAKE! Brought car in for an oil change. went to pick it up this evening. We pulled the back seat - no snake. My mechanic said the snake has to be in the trunk. Well I opened the trunk and checked a road side assistance box. flares, tape, battery cable. etc... - Guess who was in there !

Yeah

Go figure. My Mechanic got a big kick out of it

Great ending to a great story, glad to see it worked out. Give that girl a mouse tart and an extra cage clip!

An extra clip isn't a bad idea. Easterns love escaping and they are good at what they do. Until I set up a snake rack my system for an eastern involved 4 clips (not very good ones I must say) as well as a brick on each corner of the lid.

Once, back before it had ever accepted food, I had it in a deli cup with a very secure lid overnight with a pinky. The deli cup was inside the tank with the clips on and when I got up in the morning it had popped out of the cup and was not in the tank. After finding it is when I started with the bricks.

They should be renamed Lampropeltis triangulum houdini. My milk snakes plan escapes every night

My mechanic will never be the same. He's already warned me to let him know if there are anymore escapes.
It was kind of funny watching a grown man step back in mortal fear of a 20 inch harmless snake

This photo is the day I found this snake
