Wild Hoggs

cbmorphs Mar 15, 2009 03:48 PM

Here's a couple wild caught female Hogg Island boas I obtained at the Indianapolis Reptile show back in 1997 or 1998.. I bought them when they were babies. The guy I baught them from had like 30 or 40 of them in a 20 long glass aquarium. I picked the best 2 out of the bunch and 11 years later they're finally deciding to breed. I'm glad because I was about to give up!
When I first got them they were mean as all get out! The one in the 2nd photo tamed down after a few years, the other female remained meen..
I can't wait to see what they produce.. The one in the 2nd pic was paired with the best male Hogg I've ever produced. They're babies should be screamers ( I'm hoping )..
The 1st female was paired with the only other male I had ready, plus he also closely resembles his mate..

Thanks for looking,

Best of luck. I have a pair that were imported in either late 04 or early 05. They were adults when I got them. The first year I tried breeding them nothing happened, second year slugs, and third year slugs again. I hope to get even more slugs this year!

I've done everything by the books and then some, plus they're plenty old anough.. I'm breeding a known line to them that are from my 2nd and 3rd litter of Hoggs produced. My 12 year old Hogg I got from Tim Belknap has never produced any slugs, just small litters. All I can do at this point is hope for the best with these two pairings.

Keep trying you'll eventually end up making some awesome Hoggs.. They're actually pretty easy to breed when compaired to some Boas.. Maybe your taking the males out to soon or not the proper heat? Could be a few different things causing you to have slugs..

Nice looking animals though ...

Thanks for the reply,

Temps are fine. I might have tried to pair them too early in the season in past attempts. The male just shows very little interest and the female slugged out in May both years. She was probably a young adult when I got the pair but the male was five foot plus. I think he might be very old. They acclimated well and were both healthy from day one. I keep them at work now where I can observe them more frequently than my boas at home.
Best of luck to you with yours!

Thanks Kyle... All I can say is keep trying you'll figure out what the trick is with your Hoggs... Trial and error I guess..

I had a pair of 97 imports and had issue getting them to breed to. I picked up a female for myself and a male for i customer when i was working at pet shop in high school. the male came back to the shop of about three months and was just infested with parasites and ended up dieing. the female I kept for my self never had any issues whats so ever. I paired her up with a sears line. never did see "him" court her. after there years of cycling i got three female babies and slugs. then three more years of slugs before the female died. sold two of the girls (wish i hadn't) and breed the one girl last two years. first year courted like crazy locked up ever time i walked into the snake. nothing then last year i paired her to a klininberg and she had one deformed still and some slugs. put a patternless with her this year but he did even give her the time of day. so the the klininberg went back in and shes now coiled up up and looking nice and fat so hopefully something will happen this year. don't know what it is with those 97 imports but heard a couple of other had trouble getting them to breed to.
