Hey What Next??????

rustybeard Mar 16, 2009 10:39 PM

Hey guys hows it going. Well we are all settled into our new house and have lots of room now for our reptile collection. My question for everyone is.... What type of snake should I get now. I started out with two corn snakes which are flourishing and eating like pigs. Then I got my JCP which not that I like to pick favorites but he is up there on the list, just beautiful. He is finally tamed down and eating great.

I now feel like I am slightly more experienced in the art of keeping snakes and would like to move on to something else. Nothing too crazy (venomous, or super aggressive) but perhaps slightly more challenging or at least the same skill level for JCP's. So what are your thoughts and Idea's?

That is one handsome snake!

I love it.....

I may be biased, but Thamnophis are fab snakes...

For a challenge, I'd love nothing more than to see someone besides myself keep a cyclophiops major alive beyond a year!

Cyclophiops Major is an Asian arboreal snake found in the jungles of China, they are non venomous, harmless and require that you are dedicated to the art of snake husbandry.

Here are a couple of our critters....

First Limon (Asian Green)

Thanks he is a great little snake. I love your snakes they are beautiful. I especially like Thamnophis.Beautiful markings.Reminds me of when I was a kid chasing garter snakes in my early herping days. I also am very impressed with cyclophiops major. Do you have him on mice or are you feeding him earthworms. If I could get cyclophiops on pinkies then I would love to give that snake a shot for sure!

I would say, and most likely Wayne will agree, that if you got a the Asian Greensnake, that you should try to keep it on an invertebrate diet. Nightcrawlers are cheaper than pinkies, easier to acquire, and just as easy to keep. You can pick them up at MANY stores including some gas stations, they cost about $2 for a container of 12 (or less, that's just the price across the street from my house) and you just keep them in the fridge in the cup they came in. You would want to supplement the snake's diet with calcium-dusted crickets or other insects from time to time as well. Wayne can tell you a lot more about a good feeding regiment than I can for this species and he may have a care sheet on his website. The funny thing about greens (on both continents) is that they will not eat food that is wider than their head.

Thanks for the info. It definately is a beautiful snake. Does anyone else have any other suggestions? Just want to keep all my options open, you know.

Nice terrariums. Who lives where?

rustybeard Mar 20, 2009 08:30 PM

that is actually an older setup from when we lived in our apartment. But starting on the top left was ZAHI and SOLEI (leopard geko's) R.I.P. Top right would be PEITHO and ENYO (cornsnakes). Bottome right ARGYLE (bearded dragon) Bottom left RUSTY (bearded dragon). We moved into our house so now all of our tanks are not quite setup properly. But here is a picture of the terrariums now.

I would say that you should get a rainbow boa. They can be a little aggressive as babies but tame down and are not super hard to care for. Just keep the humidity high and you will do fine. They dont get huge, staying aroun 5 feet they are one of the most beautiful boas you can get. Not too pricey, only around $175- 300.
