Sucky night........

rainbowsrus Mar 17, 2009 04:25 AM

was making final rounds to check and see if anyone was breeding before I went to bed and found Hook had passed away. Crap, he's the first BRB I've lost in a loooong time and I produced him so makes it hurt even more.

Nothing wrong with anything, no signs of anything wrong except he wasn't showing any interest in his girls. Ate at last feeding, shed a little before that. He did go with me to a reptile presentation end of February and was fine there.

Nothing to do but clean the cage thoroughly - done, mourn his loss - doing that and move on.

Sad to hear David. This is the worst thing, when a animal dies without any visable cause for it.

rainbowsrus Mar 17, 2009 11:47 AM

Yeah and I know he was not visibly in any type of distress earlier that evening. It's breeding season, I check on them when I leave, when I get home, before I go to bed, when I get up etc. etc.

Sorry to hear that Dave. That sucks. I believe the male I bought off of you is Hook's offspring with Molly if I remember correctly. He's alive and well and growing like no other. Great snake.

rainbowsrus Mar 17, 2009 03:02 PM

That looks like a Molly/Hook baby, glad to hear it's doing well!!!

This is the one I held back, a female....

Dave... so sorry to hear about Hook! How heartbreaking that must be for you, especially being one of your babies. At least you have a lot of other BRBs hard at work making new little ones to lift your spirits!

Small!

She's "chewing" her food now. We've graduated to assist feeding, she's actually letting me start the food, then she takes it from there.

So sorry to hear. Poor guy! I know how much it hurts to lose one!

I lost my Zephyr (my gorgeous leopard that I'm always posting) about a month ago to a freak shedding accident. He shed and part of it stuck to his lower lip and as he was trying to get it off, it flipped up in his mouth and choked him to death. I was horrified and depressed for quite some time! He was definitely one of my faves. I feel your pain!

Look ahead to all the beautiful babies that are coming and try to shake it off!

Dave,
....I really liked that snake. I remember when you first posted PICs showing his hook pattern. We will all miss him. Sometimes when we lose a snake we can look at what happened and see that we made a mistake, sometimes they just die for no reason that we had anything to do with.

Dave,
...I would say that it just sucks to be you this week. But, I lost one this morning. She was the last of my Isla Marajo Rainbows. She got what seemed to be fast growing and spreading tumors and died within two weeks of me noticing anything wrong. So, it sucks to be us this week.
Jeff

rainbowsrus Mar 19, 2009 10:51 PM

Hey Jeff, sorry to see you've joined me in the "this week is sucky club" !!!

Unfortunate reality of keeping animals of any kind, unless they are super long lived species, we will see all of them pass away.

Dave,
...If we were to estimate that typical lifespan in captivity is 15 years and we had a collection of 60 animals with reasonably even distribution of ages we would typically see 4 old age deaths per year. I think I would have them living much longer on average here if I was not trying to breed them. At least half of my losses are related to the stresses and problems encountered in reproduction.
...When I first started keeping snakes it was rare for one to last more than 5 years in captivity. There were some animals in zoo collections that were long lived but most boids were imported and died within the first few years in captivity.
Jeff
