Detach & Re-attach UTH?

pidgejen Mar 19, 2009 01:31 PM

Hello,

I have two Zoomed undertank heaters attached to a smaller 20gal, and am upgrading to a larger cage. Can I detach the UTH's from the old tank, and reattach them to the new tank? If the adhesive doesn't work anymore, can I attach it to the glass of the new one with electrical tape? Or, will the heating elements break?

I personally never use the adhesive as I don't use glass tanks for any of my snakes..actually to be honest, I use heating pads for humans (with three settings, no auto shut off) and I just slide these under one third of the container I keep my snakes in. The low setting heats the tank perfectly without getting too hot.

For the UTH you have, duct tape will be fine to hold it to a new tank but if you have a solid shelf/stand, just lay the UTH in the space between between the frame...there should be enough space the heater isn't crushed or the cord. If not, prop up one end of the tank with folded cardboard or anything sturdy enough so you have a quarter inch of space or a bit more.

In my experience with the ZooMed UTHs they stick pretty well the second (or even third) time around. Just use isopropyl alcohol (or similar prep agent) to clean the area you're going to place the heater on and you should get a good stick. But if you're not getting as good a stick as you like either Duct Tape (as the previous poster suggested) or Gorilla Tape (my new favorite, although more expensive) should serve you well even if they get a little messy.

Hope it helps,
Dan

If you are going to peel it off make sure you are careful not to bend it too much you can damage the internal components which could cause a fire later down the road.

I have to agree with Tosha. Is saving 20 bucks worth a fire? Im not a big fan of ZooMed heat pads. Actually Im not a fan of ZooMed period. I have to reccomend you check out Ultratherm Heat Pads.

Thanks
Anthony

I agree as well! The instructions you receive with the zoomed UTH specifically tells you not to remove and re use! Sounds like a fire hazard waiting to happen!
