Question for Bcc breeders....

billw Mar 20, 2009 12:01 AM

Would a pr of Suri's still be breeding after ovulation?
It's possible she hasn't ovulated yet, but they've been going at it for a month or more now on and off and I thought it might be getting a little late in Bcc breeding season. They've been at it for most of today too.
Shame on me for not watching her closely enough to know if she has ovulated yet or not.
I've bred plenty of colubrids and crotes, but never Bcc or Bci. I'm wondering if something good will come of all this copulation?
Any thoughts?
Thanks, Bill

Keep them together as long as they are breeding. I rotate the males in for 4 days and out for 2-3 days then back in. I have had a litter drop as late as September so it is not too late! Good luck!

Thanks. So something could come from this?
Do you feed the female when you take the male out for a few days?

Kattivo Mar 20, 2009 01:12 PM

As long as they continue to breed, there still is a chance. Keep trying. I have always fed my females and males when they are separated as long as they are willing to eat. However, the portions are about 1/2 the size I normally feed and the frequency is much less, about every 2 to 3 weeks. I just feel it gets the animals through the season without the extreme loss of body mass. My females/males come out of having their litters without much weight/size loss. However, I stop feeding the females when they are about a month out from their due date.

Beautiful animals in that pic!
Surinames or Guyanans?
Any other pics of them?

I have several pairs still courting and the females have not ovulated as of yet. I think if he is still courting that he knows better than any of us...just stay out of his way LOL...

Good luck.

Sounds good to me!
I was just hoping he's not some kind of playboy and doing this for the sheer pleasure of it! lol
They're a great looking pr too, I hope it works out.

Joel_Thomas Mar 20, 2009 03:09 PM

Male don't just do that kind of stuff for pleasure LOL...

Speak for yourslef! lol
I don't have any pics of the pr at the moment. When the time is right, I'll try to snap a few.
They're very colorful and both have great tails.

I look forward to seeing them.

I went in to see if a pic would be possible, and they're locked up again. Even saw some tail waving going on.
Seems as though the copulations have become more frequent in the past week, and this is the first time I've seen any significant tail waving.
Keeping my fingers crossed.

Joel_Thomas Mar 20, 2009 04:54 PM

Tale waiving normally means he is churning baby butter Ha! Now you can start to read the rules and notes of how it is going to go.

Good luck.

I just checked on them a minute ago, and they're still locked up.
Is it safe to assume that she hasn't ovualated yet then?
She did shed back in early to mid Feb, but I didn't notice any swelling around the time.

Joel_Thomas Mar 20, 2009 06:59 PM

with BCC, my guess would be that she has not ovulated yet. This just opinion based on notes from my BCI breeding most breeding took place just before ovulation not all but most.

Keep your eyes out as the ovulations only last a day or two at most.Keep us posted.

I'll do that, and thanks for the advice.
Would it be out of the norm if all of this copulation occurred after the POS?

Joel_Thomas Mar 20, 2009 09:17 PM

The norm... yes but I can not comment that it has never happened.

Sounds good, thanks! I hope I haven't missed the window.
What are the odds of them breeding for this long if she isn't "in season" and releasing pheremones?
I'm in Az, so the cooling down didn't really start until Dec, copulation began in Feb.
Thanks for your comments!
