Rorschach is laying her eggs right now. Will she come out when she's done? I don't want to disturb her or her eggs until I know she's laid all of them.

She was near the entrance to the egg box on a break earlier, and I saw she's deflated quite a bit. She drank a bunch of water from an eyedropper, so she's all refreshed and kicking around more sand now.

As a side note, I'm happy with the egg box I gave her. She has to live on tile and rock since she eats anything particulate. I put in a small cat litter box filled with damp sand. I covered most of the box with a flat slate tile, with a gap at one end to go in and out. She's been very happy with it, too, and has been digging it from one corner to the other.

I am glad that you posted about this. I use tile as well, and I have one clearly gravid female, so I was debating whether to set up a "maternity" tank with sand or set up something in the viv. I am really glad that she took to it. I will try that, and if mine won't accept it, I will have the maternity ward set up just in case.

Isn't this nerve wracking?? One of my 2.5 year old beardies just laid her first batch of infertile eggs, and I have been worried sick! She only laid 4, and I am told she could still have eggs in there because they usually lay more. She is acting and eating just fine, so we'll see. The vet is on notice! LOL!

W00t!! She came out and ate a handful of crickets. I assumed this means she's done laying. After removing her to a different room, I pulled 8-1/2 eggs out of two separate piles. The half looks like a partially formed egg that didn't make it all the way. It's kind of stuck to another egg, so I didn't pull them apart for fear of damaging the good one. They all appear fertile, though some were already hardening and it was a little harder to tell. They're all in the incubator now and I'm crossing my fingers. Woohooo!

Another thing to note: my vet recommended NeoCalGlucon (calcium syrup) since on her radiograph it looked like she needed the extra calcium. I went on a hell of a search for it. I found out NeoCalGlucon and the generics (all of them, according to the pharmacist) have been discontinued by the manufacturer. My vet provided me with some (ouch - expensive that way), but I couldn't find another source.

Just a heads up to people who use it with gravid females. Does anyone know of something else to use? I didn't know if the salt structure of this particular product was important, so I didn't just arbitrarily try something else.

Thanks Eve! I have several rescues here with histories of MBD, and a tiny bottle of bone aid is expensive! Is this product comparable? It sure would be cheaper.

PHEve Mar 21, 2009 10:04 AM

This product is for humans and used for animals as well. I just wanted Torey to see this and decide if it was what she was looking for as far as price/ so forth. You guys can run it by your Vets and see what they think

We all use different things and do it our own way, I have used this for a long time, the only thing with syrup is it is thick and sticky-ish, so I do dilute with water,. half and half. I usually just fil the cap of the bottle a quarter of the way and then add the same amount of water.
The amound I make up depends on how much I will need and how many lizards I'm supplimenting.

When you ask your Vet his thoughts on this product you can also ask how much he would use so you will feel comfortable. You can also do some searches on it the name I gave and Laboratory that makes it. You can also find it a couple dollars cheaper too I was just using the link to show Torey what I use.

This product is a generic of NeoCalGlucon, so it's what my vet recommended. As for how much, I'd have to check with him to be sure.

This is the radiograph they took. I thought it was super interesting! You can see egg outlines all in the abdomen. Very cool.

OK, so I don't know what they're supposed to look like. The first day, two of them were a little dimpled so I put a few drops of water near them and they filled back out. Now they're all full, but they have a yellowish oily (?) look on parts of them. I lowered the humidity a little bit to see if that would help. I haven't touched them since putting them in the incubator, so I don't know if they've hardened up.

Any thoughts from the picture? The dark freckles are sand, but you can see the weird areas.

They could be a little under calcified, but otherwise look ok.
Color is not always bright white, Austin and I have hatched some that were more tan-manilla collored. As long as they keep good shape, there is hope. If they start to mold and deflate quickly, while becoming more discolored they are bad.
Good luck
Nick

Rory did such a wonderful job!! Remember the photo of Ripcord hatching? His egg was quite dark. The color wouldn't worry me, although I'm not sure about the oily part. It is possible that Ripcord is too young to do his part, but don't give up on the eggs. If they are not good, they will become really yucky looking and you will know.
Obviously Rory can do her part, and Ripcord will father hatchlings. He is the descendant of the horniest lizard I have ever had. I brought my lizards out of brumation yesterday. Even though he was a bit uncoordinated, and the terrarium is still on the coolish side, Hoboken was bobbing his head at the ladies, puffing up and showing interest within the first couple of hours. (Of course, just like most days, they wanted nothing to do with him!)
