stupid breeding questions

SnakeCharmer77 Mar 20, 2009 09:59 PM

ok...i hate looking stupid, but i am always willing to ask the stupid questions. lol...dont get me wrong, i can be a pretty smart person, but how will one learn if they do not ask even the most basic of questions......so here we go...

lets say i have 2 snakes. one is a morph- Possibly het for something else. and the other snake is a normal. does it make a difference if the normal is male or female? i mean, if the normal is male and the morph is female will you get more normals than if it was the other way around?
what about if both snakes were morphs or possible hets? what if i have a butter male and a mojo female...will it give me different odds than if it were a mojo male and a butter female?
does that make sense? lol

anyways. i see that ALOT of people have their males up for sale- which i understand why. and of course the males being slightly cheeper than the females. im just wondering if it makes a difference what the sex is, so long as i have male/female...since m/m or f/f wont do a dang bit o good on a reproduction level.. anyways if it makes sense and you can answer me that would be lovely...THANKS :D

Doesn't matter where the genes come from male or female you'll get the same results.

It isn't a stupid question. There are sex linked genes in humans. The gene for color blindness is on the "y" chromosone so only men are color blind. So if you can't tell the difference between red and green you can blame your father. But none of the morph genes have been sex linked in ball pythons (yet).
It doesn't matter if the morph is male or female the odds for each egg being a morph will be the same. But, a morph male can breed multiple females, so you can get multiple clutches containing morph babies. If your morph is a female, then you will only get one clutch of eggs with that morph.

I agree with the last post. Which is why values of codoms drop so fast. If breeders only sold females and held onto males then morphs would retain more value. You should only buy males the same season you are going to breed to protect your investment. It works the other way with recessive though.
