Introducing papuans?

jonasgn Mar 21, 2009 04:07 PM

Hello
Do any of you guys have some good tips or guidelines, how to put papuan pythons together for breeding?
Do i introduce the male to the female or vice versa?
Or maybe put both in a third enclosure?
Any input will be appriciated.

Regards Jonas

How old and how large are they? Females WILL attack and eat males.

I have discussad at length with a gentleman how he breeds his Papuans yearly(I think he may be the only one to cosistantly produce with them). He feeds his females LARGE meals a day or two before he introduces the pairs, and he wipes or mists down his males with either a vodka solution, or diluted alchohol to get rid of some of the smell from the male.
He then introduces the males to the females. Keep a good eye on them, and have a few people with you in case the female freaks and tries to eat him. Keep the vodka spray bottle close as well to help get the female off. Good luck and keep us posted!!!!!

I sent mine to a friend in Fl., and he has 9 adults. Evidently they have to be at least 7-9 years old to breed. He and I discussed a large rubber band over the female's mouth, lol. I had a pair of 12 footers, and I kept them together for about 6 months. She only tried to eat him once.

Ok thanks
I know its difficult to say, but how old would you estimate a 10 feet papuan female and male to be?
I dont know if my female is old and large enough to breed, but i think my male is.

As crazy as it sounds, I know somebody that uses a secured (don't ask me how, I don't know. But can find out) stocking over the head over a females head. And it works.

I will try to do that. What is the name of the papuan breeder?

Vinigar is what he sprays/wipes down the male with.........sorry for the mis-information, the alchohol is to get them to let go if they bite and don't let go,LOL!!!!!! Good luck!!!!

I have a 12 ft. female and a male at /- 11 ft. They are both at least 7 years old, and I've had both for the past six. My male has shown great interest in breeding, my female none. I grew them very slowly, and I've gone to some length to avoid obesity. That said, my female is considerably heftier than my male.

The female was probably CH, the male imported at around 6ft.
I introduce the female to the male's cage. Its an anxiety producing event for both animals, and I more-or-less supervise them. The first couple of times they thrashed about a fair bit, the last couple of times they found a corner and stayed there. I didn't witness any copulation. I'll try again next fall.

Fantastic animals though. It'll be a shame if they don't breed, but even if they do there just isn't much of a market for them. It will be saturated pretty quickly if many of us who are trying actually succeed.
