That's a Gulf Coast Spiny Softshell. And it's a sweet find. Here's the Ohio (Eastern Spiny Softshell) version I found while canoeing a couple years ago:

I've been seeing a lot of those messed up eyes on the water snakes up here in Ohio the last couple years. Anybody know what causes it? I've also seen it on a couple garters.

It’s a kid with a turtle 
The softshells down here can stick their neck out a really long way, probably enough to bite you when you’re holding them like that! I’ve been bit by just about everything, but would not want to get bit by one of those. I think they take pieces out!
