speckled kings breeding

mattkau Mar 21, 2009 10:03 PM

Well my female spec. king shed tonight and I put the male in with her and they were locked up within minutes. This is the first breeding for this wc pair. They're actually the first snakes that I've bred since getting back into the hobby last year. I'm excited.

They were both collected by myself in Calcasieu Parish, La. They will probably have to be started on anoles and med. geckos. That's not a problem though, as there are plenty on my property. I should be able to switch them to pinks without much difficulty. I caught the male about two years ago and fed him anoles for about the first year that I had him. He does take rodents without hesitation though. Here's a not so good pic of the pair. The female is the bigger less speckled of the two.

Thanks everyone. It seems there might be some renewed interest in holbrooki, from the many threds below. I just hope everything goes well with the egg laying and the incubation. It's been some years since I've bred anything. It gives me some confidence that I at least got the brumation and pairing correct. Now comes the hard part, waiting. If I understand correctly, I should be looking for her to lay after her next shed, right? I've never bred kings before, only rat snakes. What's a good incubation temp. for speckleds? I used to use vermiculite as a substrate, is that still a good product? Also, they stayed connected for about three hours, then I seperated them the next night. Should I put them back together a few more times to see if they will mate again for better odds of fertilization? Sorry for all the questions, I'm just excited. Even though they're locally collected kings, it's still cool to witness a breeding. They are kind of my guinea pigs. I've got some high dollar pairs of different species that will be ready to go next year.

I'd feed them and wait a couple days and re-introduce. can't hurt to get a second shot (pun intended) in! I try for 79-81 degrees. She should lay within 10 days of shedding, get that lay box ready for her several days in advance of her shed. Some go immediately after. I use slightly damp sphagnum in her lay box, wringed well, I will be trying vermiculite with egg crate on top this year.
