Females in cycle, males not interested!!

BCIexotics Mar 22, 2009 11:24 AM

I"ve been monitoring two females since October and over the past 2 months have found tremendous growth in their follicles.

Have measured increase in all follicles that are growing in unison, and measure now in the high 30mm range. The rate of growth has also been pretty rapid. BAsed on past experience, this suggests almost all of the time that they are definitely in cycle and should ovulate soon.

Only thing is, i've had two and even up to three males on each, and none have shown any interest.

Don't know what to think. Am clueless at this point.

Anyone have any ideas?

Maybe a 24 hour camera and recorder, I think a lot goes on when we are asleep. It seems that you keep records on your females have you bred these girls before?

I have a pair together right now who just yesterday started to court, I have not measured her follicle developement and have not noticed any increase in girth as of yet, but I had pretty much given up until yesterday.

I heard this line the other day: "the best thing we can do this time of year is take up other hobbies"

agree with that statement!

I don't keep a 24hr watchful eye on them, but for sure these males aren't even courting. I'll keep em on her no doubt, but if she ovulates and i hadn't seen any breeding, I'll be very disapointed. It also wouldn't make much sense to me. It's pretty odd, if you know and confirm a female is in cycle like i have, what reason, if there is any, would a male not be interested in courting her? Can't be off season..i've had males breed at all times of the year. Enviromental conditions? I've experimented with different temps and humidity to see what might get them going, but to no avail.

LIke you said, looks like i need to find another hobby for the time being...get my head out of the sand =)

That is unusual that those boys are not trying since you are certain she is in her cycle. Excuse my ignorance but I always thought that courting males is what sparked the female to start follicular development and ultimately ovulation.

Enlighten me further on what you know as I am always thirsty for knowledge, thanks and keep us posted.

Males usually don't stimulate Females. It's usually vice versa. Females cycle through their own natural rhythms, and the Males follow accordingly. That's why a Male will breed year round. I've seen alot of my Females that havn't been bred swell twice a year. Usually in Feb/March, and again in August/September if they aren't gravid from earlier.

My pr have been copulating on and off for a month now, though I never saw any swelling. I was beginning to look for a new hobby as I thought it was to late in the season now.
This week the copulations have become much more frequent, and for the past 3 days or so they've been locked up almost all day/night.

Well, in my experience with monitoring follicle growth, i've noticed females will start developing growth at any given time of the year. sometimes they grow slowly and nothing happens. Sometimes a few will grow and the others will stall out. This has always meant in my cases that they don't go into cycle and don't ovulate.

Usually i'll introduce a male once i've seen growth and theri follicle size is within a 15-20 mm range. Follicles start out small at around 3mm and grow from there.

It is my opinion that the introduction of the male will further "ignite" her follicle development and ovulation. So you may be right there. I'm not sure if there has been a boa that has delivered slugs wihtout having been with a male...i may be incorrect on that.

I start my breeding season in the fall and cool my temps, but i measure all my females follicles year round. Some of my females have gone into cycle later on, at which point i've introdeuced males without even affecting the environmental conditions, and quite honestly, on each of them i have produced viable young. I'm 3 for 3 on that, not much but great odds nonetheless.

Same thing this year, i've got these 2 females that are late bloomers, and are definitely in cycle...but this timethe males arent' interested.

I've only been ultrasounding for 2 years now and have learned a lot, but have yet much to learn.
