Bioactive Substrate/ Vivarium for Snakes

Dpoling Mar 23, 2009 08:43 AM

I have been reading the book "The Art of Keeping Snakes" by Philippe de Vosjoli and I really want to set up a naturalistic vivarium for my BRB at some point. I was wondering if anyone on the forum has a setup that uses his ideas of a bioactive substrate with plants and hides that allow the snakes to be seen or rather enjoyed?

If you have read this book or employ the authors techniques or even some variation of them, could please explain your setup or show some pictures?

Thanks for any information you can provide!

I tried modified versions of it about 15 years ago. I knew the author was already utilizing the concept so I did not have an exact recipe nor sufficient drainage.

I'm hoping to have a cage with bioactive substrate in the works by the end of the summer. I have the book and plan to follow it closely.

What are you keeping in them and any pics?

I too am very interested in this but have yet to put it into fruition, I really need to just do it but I don't have any snakes that I think this will work for....yet...

I haven't done it yet, but I am very interested in trying. I was soliciting information about other's experiences with it. I have a Brazilian rainbow boa that I would like to try housing with this method.

I made this 10 gal desert viv for a juvi cal king.

It was set up for a little under a year and never "cleaned". When I broke it down I found a really cool network of tunnels as well as a few shed skins and some poop in the rocks.

The tank has a layer of large gravel, a screen, a layer of fine gravel, and then 2-3 inches of dirt. This worked fine for a desert setup but with a tropical set up you must have some way to drain water out of the bottom. Either a drilled tank or a hidden tube going to the bottom so that you can siphon water off.
