Cypress mulch for a black milk?

Kevin Saunders Mar 24, 2009 12:16 AM

I'll be picking up a subadult black milk this week and I'm trying to plan out just how to set him up. Most of my prior snake experience is with corns and other rat snakes which I kept on aspen or carefresh. I liked that their feces would clump and dry in those substrates for easier cleaning, but from reading the archives it sounds like a black milk would be better off with more humidity.

I was thinking a humid hide on carefresh would probably give me the best of both worlds, but I thought I'd check with those of you who use/have used cypress in the past and see what you think? While I don't want a damp substrate that leads to mold and smeared feces, I also don't want the snake to feel confined to the humid hide all the time either and don't have a great idea how sensitive black milks are to humidity levels. Other than a spazzy little honduran I kept for a friend for about a week, I really have no experience with any milks so if there's anything else I should be mindful of, feel free to offer advice. Thanks.

Cypress worked fine for my black milks.

I keep my black milks on cypress, looks good and I've had no problems with mold or cleaning.
