Are there piebald lines other than "Kahl"?

PiedPeddler Sep 11, 2003 08:58 PM

It seems whenever I see a line associated with piebalds, it's the Kahl line. Just curious if there are others out there. Thanks.

Yes...

But are they THAT different? Mr. Ernie Wagner originally owned the first Piebald Ball Python (back in 1995) and bred it for a couple of years then sold it. It soon ended up with Mr. Pete Kahl and he bred it to his stock to develop the "Kahl Line." There were very few "Wagner" animals distributed but the people that got them said that they thought the "Wagner" stuff fed better through the 600-900 gram "lull" area that usually hangs up on "Kahl" animals.

Personally, I have not witnessed this myself. All of our Piebals stock is "Kahl" line and some friends of mine work with some "Wagner" line animals but we both seem to have the same luck. Aside from them being finicky like Ball Pythons are... we have not witnessed any difference between the "lines." We both work with Pieds, 100% Hets, 50% Poss Hets and 66% Poss Hets.

Perhaps there have been "new lines" brought over from Africa but We haven't seen too much of that and I think they would be compatible. Just remember the "Pied signs"... warped pattern (double lined striping) and the dirty chin thing. There have been some impressive "ringers/bullseyes" that have been passed off as Pieds... they are not.

Hope this helped clear a little confusion and not create more

LATER!

Article in April 1999 issue of "Reptiles Magazine" page 11 - states that piebalds have been recorded since 1966. Also Tyron Dillon brought two into this country in the 1980s.
Pete was the first to prove that they were genetic. I purchased my hets in 1997 right after it was proven by him.

I think all piedalds are / would be compatable to breed to each other.

The first piebald ever brought into this country was imported by ZOOLOGICAL IMPORTS 2000, INC. It is on video along with the first pair of Albino Bumese which they also imported but never got credit for. The were credited to Tom Crutchfield whom helped negotaite the "loaning" of the animals to BOB CLARK. Bob was supposed to split babies but never did from what I have heard due to the confinment of the owner of Zoological Imports. He is no longer confined and hasnt seen anything come of it???
The first piebald was imported for $8.00 and sold to an employee for $150.00
then it was sold to someone else who then sold it to Brian Sharp who sold it to Pete Kahl. I think thats how it went.
Anyways, the first recorded(on video) was brought in by Zoological Imports 2000, inc.
Anybody want to buy the video? lol.

I didn't know the history of that Piebald male previous to Ernie Wagner owning it. I did hear that Ernie sold it to Brian Sharp and then it went to Pete Kahl and I believe finally settled with Brian from BHB.

As for the "Reptiles Magazine" article... I didn't read the '99 article but I will try to dig it up. If you look back to the October 1995 (I think) Reptiles Magazine there was a side column write-up on both the Caramel Albino and Piebald that Ernie owned.

All discussion and arguements aside... all the "lines" seem to have originated from the same Piebald male...

Thanks...

How in the world did the piebald get purchased for only $8.00? Then to be sold for $150.00? I am going to assume that the person who paid $8.00 must have worked there. Was the purchase made in Africa or in the U.S.?
