Odd-ball Latin American Milks...

Sunherp Mar 24, 2009 11:36 AM

I think it's time to see everyone's secret, odd-ball, Latin American forms! I'm talking about L. t. oligozona, conanti, stuarti, polyzona, andesiana, and the like! Hell, let's include any wild-type critter from south of the US-Mexico border! Got locality? Got generics? Let's see 'em!

-Cole

I'll start us off with a few polyzona:
Adult breeder

A few of her offspring:

(notice the secondary black bands in this about-to-shed individual)

And a couple of imported hondurensis

And a good old het.-fer-nothin' hondurensis produced by Dell:

I'm not sure I understand this het. for nothing you speak of. Is this some kind of new top secret morph?

Thanks Joe, it's from a few years ago. We'll see if she goes again this year, she's looking good.

Dell Is that styro cooler where you keep your eggs heated? or is it used to keep the humity level high? Im interested to see your technique. In fact I think we should have a post of all our eggs set ups

Doug, It's not a styro. cooler, it's a chicken egg Hova Bater and I would never recommend using one.
I had used it for a few years and it worked fine until last year when it spiked in temp. from 78 degrees to 120 degrees, while I was out of town working for 5 days. (I'm lucky it didn't burn the house down.) Needless to say it cooked to death all the clutches I had in it.
I really don't like to talk about it it makes me so bummed out and mad. So that's all I'm going to say.

I did have one multistrta that laid her clutch after the "incident", and I put the clutch in a small tub on moist perlite, and put the tub on the heat tape of my snake rack and the clutch did fine. The temp. in the tub was a little low, 68 or 70 degrees if I remember right. The heat tape is set at 84.
The clutch just went a little longer in the egg was all.

This year I'm making a incubater out of a cooler and heat tape, w/ a thermostat. I'll try and post some photos when it's done. But an incubater photo is pretty boring compared to a good Milk photo, if you ask me.
Peace,

-Dell

Its always good to share the mistakes we make so that others can learn. My system is simple I use a shoe box filled with garden peat moss and i keep it in the kitchen above the cupboards. This year I may use the heat tape and just elevate the shoe box with a few bricks.Btw do you think longer hatch times equals bigger hatchlings? My neighbor keeps his eggs in a pail with some with a moist substrate.I wonder how snakes do it w/o incubators .

First, a couple of pics of my '07 Acapulco Conanti. He didn't want to stay still for his 15 minutes of fame, so the pics aren't
the best but here goes. The female is deep in shed, so no pics.

Next a "group" photo of my '07 mixed locale Polyzona from Jeff Hardwick.

The male is on top, and still has a lot of white, but the female
has all ready started to fill out her black bands.
Then there's my lone female Gaigeae, sorry about the messy photo. I plan on getting her a mate in the future.

I also have a pair of '07 Guanacaste Stuarti coming from Jeff Hardwick. I'll post pics after they arrive. Both of my het for nothing tangerine Hondos are in shed, so no decent pics. Maybe after they shed...........
Enjoy!
