can anyone tell me the maximum depth for a probe on a female gopher snake? I am talking about the number of scales. Some books give you a range #-# is male, this # to this # is female. That type of thing. I have what is suposed to be a female. It probed deep for a female and shallow for a male. By the shape of the tail, I'd say female, but corns are my "thing", and I dont have any experience with gophers. The only other two snakes (1 def. male, one def. female) that I have for comparison are way too small to help.
These are albino sonoran gophers, if that matters.
Thanks for any feedback, in advance. I can't find any info on the net.

Misty, I am sorry that no one answered your question, I have not probed my two Sonorans, they were wild caught and were absolutely night and day different. What was your outcome and how did you arrive at the answer?

I ended up taking my snake to a friend who runs a serpentarium. We compared tails to his pair which were of the same size. She was just like his female and nothing like the male. He then probed her. To top it off, we put my snake in with my friends male and they mated within 15 minutes. I'd say that is the best way to confirm. lol.
Thanks for reading!

Dont look for an exact depth for probing , rather look for comparisons. A male when probed will go to a pretty "deep" depth. where the female will barely go at all. A male wil go anywhere from maybe 5 and up subcaudal scales where as the female may go 2 or 3 or so. After probing some you will just know whats what ... the males cavity lets the probe slide right in .... where as the females just dont.
Hope that help ! sorry no one else responded to you
