Dream Frogs

yeagermeister111 Sep 11, 2003 09:33 PM

I'm just interested to hear what everyone's dream frogs are here. I used to keep lists of what I wanted, but would always beat the list within a few months. I don't keep frogs anymore, but I am curious and can relive some of the experiences I had with your dream frogs if I had them.
Best,
Justin

Very achievable list. The only real problem is getting super nice fine spotted leucs. There are some that are alright around, but not spectacular in my humble opinion.

Justin

Justin,

Before i go on about my down to earth dream frogs, could i ask you why you don't have frogs anymore? I bet you miss it. I fell in love with Darts when i was probably 8 when i saw them at a zoo, and tried for so long to be successful with them. I got some auratus when I was like 11 from a pet store, and didn't know how to treat them. I then later got some mantellas, the blue with the gold on the back, and for some reason they all died. I think a parasite got to em--I was in 7th grade when this happened. I then proceeded my freshman year to get some sub-adult auratus. I was so pumped, and i completely forgot about vitamin and calcium supplements, and they all became lethargic and died within a month. Another failed time. Well, that leads me to now. i am a senior in high school, and i have 7 healthy and thriving sub-adult and adult hawaiian auratus, with tads on the way. I lead all of this to say that, despite all of my failures, i was bound to get it right sometime, and i couldn't get out of this hobby. I love it too much, so i was wondering why you had gotten out of it.

Well on to the dream frogs. I'm a pretty down-to-earth guy, and i've always wanted the azureus. When i got into darts, i remember them being 125 each for a froglet, and they were so awesome. They still are, and hopefully i'll be able to get some soon. I'm about to get a tank ready to go for the future, but right now i'm building shelves in my bedroom for everything.

If i wasn't so down-to-earth, i'd probably have to say the Lehmanni. I love their color scheme, and they are so rare in the hobby right now. I don't know of anyone selling them, and i imagine that they're really hard to care for and breed, since they're egg-feeders.

Sorry for the long post, but maybe it was worthwhile!

Hi,
It was about the most difficult thing I have ever done to get out of dart frogs. I sold them because I am pretty much devoting my professional life to them doing research on them in the field. I got to a point while in Costa Rica that selling them (from breeding) was not appropriate while asking for collection permits (which are necessary for doing research in the country) for research animals. To avoid any speculation as to why I needed the frogs, I sold all my hobby frogs. I never did end up taking any out of the country, but rather I will be donating them to a frog zoo down there which will do my captive manipulations. I keep a few geckos now to make up for the frogs, but it is not the same. I miss them greatly, but some of the geckos I have are very nice as well. I do have to say though, that seeing dart frogs in their native habitat is amazing, and worth the trade-off.

The D. histrionicus are from Ecuador and Colombia. I was invited to do a trek there, which I may accept at some time. It would be dangerous, but well worth it.

Justin,
How many different auratus morphs are down there in Costa Rica, just the green and blacks ones?................Mark W.

yeagermeister111 Sep 11, 2003 11:19 PM

There are actually two distinct morphs. The Pacific vs Caribean. The Pacifics have more black and the undersides are a bit different. The Caribeans are what we normally call Costa Ricans.

Hey Justin, what was your major in college to get that kind of a job. Im premed right now and my backup plan was to travel the world and work with animals like jeff corwin (laugh track here). hehe

yeagermeister111 Sep 12, 2003 08:39 AM

I'm in the process of switching out of the B.S. program for biology into the B.A. for wildlife conservation. I have already done all the work for the B.S. so they may let me keep it, who knows. If you want your own show, you may need to start with little projects first. I finished 2 shows with the BBC for Discovery Channel, so we'll see about my film career. Actualy I don't really want to do a show, but from time to time it is fun.

Justin

The hard one here is the black and whites. To the best of my knowledge, Thomas only has one lone male, and I don't know anyone else with this form. I tried to find it in Panama, but didn't really have the time to search that hard for it. I did find some new types though, which will be up on the site eventually.

Krobar Sep 12, 2003 01:09 AM

My Dream is the Demonic dart frogs, although I'm very taken by D. Mysteriosus too!

yeagermeister111 Sep 12, 2003 08:40 AM

What is the demonic dart frogs, I've never heard of that common name?

Peaceofthetropic Sep 12, 2003 02:43 AM

I would have to say Colon Island pumilios. Justin if by chance you know anyone with these, could you let me know. By the way, that female Bastimentos I bought from you is doing awesome for me.

Glad to know she is still doing very well. I actually don't keep frogs any more, but last I heard Black Jungle was producing a few babies of the Isla Colon form.

unfortunatly I don't have enough time at the moment for new species of frogs, actually I just sold my bassleri's, tricolors, leucs and panguana's.

When I finish my studies and have enough time I'd like to have E. petersi, E. silverstonei and orange or red trivs. Also every species of the colosthetus genus is welcome.

Greetings Remco

D. lehmanni

yeagermeister111 Sep 12, 2003 02:33 PM

Many years ago we tried to locate E. petersi and the like in that group with poor success in Europe. I hear there are some people that keep them, but very hard to locate. I too would love to have a huge tank of E. silverstonei, but that day is a long time off (retirement).
