okay so heres the deal, i have been wanting and looking to get Saphira a boyfriend for months now only problem is money is getting tight.... like real tight.... i am getting my tax return back here pretty soon plus a little extra from stimlus should help. but even after all that i dont know if its wise to use that money to buy a BRB.

im still working so that is a plus, however my hours have been cut in half. i did apply for part time unemployment that should also help and i am constantly looking for an additional part time job.

does anyone else feel the tighttining of the noose? i see that both jeff and dave dont have much left for 08s so it looks like people are still buying maybe? how is everyone else holding up? i myself am getting nervous lol

It sounds like to me your asking if you should buy a snake when you really don't have the money to do so, if this is the case then I would save that money because you might need it someday soon.

Sadly this is what is happening with the economy right now because people were irresponsible with there money, if you know your hours are getting cut back that's a sign to SAVE and look for another job, be aware that other people have no problem taking/spending your money. And your planning on getting married plan on having allot less money then you do now for a few years.

Do me a favor open another secondary checking account then take out $10 a week from your paycheck in a years time you will be able to buy 2-3 more BRBs and not have any worries over it.

Hopes this helps and good luck times are going to get harder before they get any better.

your right buying a snake right now is not the bast idea however tempting it may be. i think i was more curious as to how everyone else is doing compared.

i guess i am an example of someone who isnt buyuing because of the economy is everyone else in the same boat? are people trying to sell off thier collection i know i saw Aubury had a couple of hers up.

i was just courious as i sit here at home having not worked yesterday or today... however my boss did just call and i can go in for a coule hours this afternoon so thats good something is better than nothing!

Stephen,
....There are lots of jobs available in some fields. Hospitals are still paying bonuses to nurses. My hospital recently offered me a bonus just to switch from part time to full time for a couple months. You could get a degree in almost anything related to health care and be pretty sure of finding a good job. There is still a shortage of teachers in many parts of the country. Law enforcement and security jobs are in demand in some areas. The military is always hiring and the education benifits could be your ticket to a great career. Get the right education and you should be recession proof for a decade. During that decade you should be getting more education because the world is changing rapidly. The great job this year may be gone in a few years. I went back to college when I was 40. It is never too late for someone to get a first or second or even third degree so that they do not have to worry about job security. I have credits from six different colleges. If I was not ready to retire(I am 56) I would be taking more classes right now.
....I still have a few BRBs to sell. I am too attached to them to get busy and post ads for them. I had litters late in 2008 and had a bunch of them when it was too cold to ship. I advertised them in january at low prices expecting sales to be soft. To the contrary sales went very well but I had to hold them for people in the northern states. I am still holding a few waiting for warmer weather. I have sold some of the best ones for premium prices locally in the last month. I think many people have held off on big purchases and are staying closer to home. Because they are spending less big money they have money available for their pets and so the snake market is currently doing okay. A friend who has a store that sells salt water fish told me that his business is going well with good sales this year.
....Most of us see this recession as a bad thing, which it is. But just like in every recession before this one and even the depression in the 30s there are some people who can see the big picture and do well. Ten years from now there will be people who make millions because they invested in the right thing today.
Jeff

so it really is all about the education then huh. i did not go to colledge at all out of highschool because i was never colledge material. however now that im a bit older more mature a tiny bit more grown up, i feel that if i did try going back to school i would at least have somewhat of a fighting chance to keep my head just above water.

i consider myself a tradesman, im skilled in working with my hands figuring things out mechanically, and in that type of feild i feel education is outweighed by experence. here is an exaggrated exapmpl;

you want to have a deck built off the side of your house...

would you hire the construction graduate who was top of his class or

the carpenter who has been in bussiness for 20 years...

tradsmen are in my eyes allways needed right, houses need building and remodling, cars allways break down and such.

lol now i feel like im talking myself into circles. but the thing is that when the economy does slow down those "big purchases" you where talking about happens to include home remodeling. so when everyone says "we can wait till next year to remodel the kitchen" it directly affects me

but your comparing those big purches with the pet industry was a good one and it make sence to me so thank you.

and i do know that things will turn around and get back to a point where everything will start growing again (assuming obama doesnt turn this country into a comunist country)

anyways after working a few hours yesterday arternoon i had a message from a security system company wanting me to come in for an interview. so even if nothing comes of it that a good sign.

i think i just am being impatcient with my herping hobby i want to jump right in and not have to wait till i can afford the animal then wait till they can breed... mainly because i feel like the longer i wait the more will come up inbetween that will put it off that much longer.... ohh well i guess right life happens, so we will see

Stephen,
...As Doctor Phil would say. How's that working out for you? You have the experience and the skills but here you are getting beat up financially when the economy has a hiccup (admittedly a big hiccup). There is a need for skilled workers but as you see recently the demand fluctuates with the economy. Think about what you can do differently so that you do not get your hours and income cut every time the economy changes. The world is changing too rapidly for any of us to think that we are going to have the same job ten years from now. Many of our fields will change and move on in very different directions. Think about what you REALLY want to do and what you need to do to make it happen.

I agree with Jeff for the most part. I've been a half-step in front of layoffs for the last 8 years. I have no choice but to make a radical change. However, I do believe skilled workers will always be needed in basic areas that cannot be outsourced (plumbing, HVAC, electrician, etc.) It still might be tough, but if you're more dependable, honest and responsible than competitors, things might not be too bad. If you can somehow tie
this to health care or the government (ie, employed by a hospital or a government run building), that would be even better. Those are the only two areas that might actually see job growth/security in the foreseeable future, imo.

Having said all that, I guess I'm not as optimistic as you guys. I truly hope I'm wrong, but I don't see this current "recession" as part of a normal cycle. I don't see things getting better. Our economy is basically a bubble based on velocity of money (ie, how many times a dollar trades hands), and it's popping. A large percentage of the population wants handouts from "the government." Jobs are being outsourced in huge numbers. There are more homs/apartments than people needing homes/apartments. Again, I hope I am way off base. But even if I am, at least maybe I can get a few votes for forum grouch.

Thanks,
Ed

I agree with both Jason and Jeff....

If money is tight due to work constraints, now is NOT the time to be taking on another snake.

And time to be looking for a job / career in a "safer" sector.

Personally, I'm doing fine. My job is going steady. Not to say there won't be another round of "workforce reductions" and there is always the possibility of being "included" in one of those actions. My snake sales were strong last year, not a single 2008 BRB left unsold. I also believe people are holding off on the bigger purchases leaving some dollars available for smaller purchases.

thats why i was thrown off i figured that sales would be down because here i am not buying and i know im not the only one... but after thinking about it i agree it makes sence. i think that maybe the differance for me is that is that a BRB IS one of those "big purchases"

so an example of how i understand it is that people arnt buy the $2,500 flat screen tv, so a $200 snake isnt a big deal... yet I see it as dont buy the $200 snake and the $15 pair of running shorts isnt a big deal.... so same situation just on a smaller scale i think i understand it now
