Vanishing Pattern

snake_bit Mar 26, 2009 11:01 AM

I was looking at some snakes in the classified here and I noticed a vanishing pattern SA milk.Do they come like that out of the egg?(vanished) Or do they disappear as they get older?(vanishing)
Are they worth less because of this problem?

South American? San Antonio? I'm not sure which subspecies or ad you're referring to. The only vanishing pattern milks I see on there are Hondurans and Sinaloans. Those would typically hatch out as vanished as they'll ever be... their patterns may change in brightness and contrast as they age, but as far as I know, the bands don't actually move relative to each other or change in number, unless obscured by a darker pigment, as would happen with a gaigeae or polyzona.

Hey Doug,

If you mean the pattern on South American milks darkens (w/black tipping) as they get bigger, I've noticed that too. It seems like that happens with most milks that I'm familiar with except for scarlet kings & Mexican milks. (Anyone else notice the same thing?) Pyros, z's, & alterna seem to retain their color better than most milks.

Before herpers started selective breeding for color, pueblans, sinaloans & hondorans all darkened as they grew.

Nice snakes! They look just like mine.

When you get one with "vanishing" pattern, beware! With each shed the snake will get smaller and smaller until its completely gone, but at least you knew it was "vanishing" when you bought it.

By the way, is the snake in the 1st picture for sale? and if so, how much? I am willing to pay cash and quickly try to breed it before it disappears.
