My First Pairing

KenC Mar 26, 2009 06:29 PM

Well if all goes planned this will be the first pair of snakes I have ever bred. I am very excited. I have not seen anything yet but when ever I walk in the room they are always together.

The Avalanche has already started-it is too late for the pebbles to vote....

And what a great way to start, with nice red bulls.

One thing I've noticed when keeping species in pairs or groups - if one male and one female spend a great deal of time together, this means they have chosen/accepted one another as a breeding pair. I originally thought it may be due to both wanting the same basking area, but now I think there is more too it, based on the results I've seen.

Whatever the case, that female of yours looks full of ovom right now, or a big meal.

She has been eating 2 small rats a week for a month since I brought her out of brumation. She is around 5 1/2 ft and thick. I may have been able to breed her last year but I decided to wait one more year. If everything goes well I may pair the male with a white sided female I have.

Thanks for all the compliments.

Hey Ken, is that White Sided female picture recent? She looks very thick on the last third of her body, in other words probably ready to breed. Good luck everything

That picture is about 6 months old. I follow the Tom Stevens feeding regimen which may account for there growth. At least for the females I follow the regiemn. I just need to watch there weight more as they get older.

Haha! Well they look great!
Like many folks I am pinching pennies now til 09 babies are around and I had a delay early this season as far as having enough mice goes.... so I offered many snakes rats that usually take mice. Plenty of stuffed Kings here right now and lots of happy Pits too. My Bulls can handle large meals much better than Pines or Gophers, and the mother of the True Ghost Bull is going to eat a huge meal next week. She's gonna look like a python when she's done. Hopefully she will give me a nice fat clutch of eggs. Tons of fun....have a good one
