nighttime temps-60's too cold?

yankeeslover Mar 27, 2009 07:17 AM

Hello.question, I have a new desert kingsnake, and I remember reading somewhere that its safe to let the temps in the tank drop into the mid 60's at night.....I use a lamp for heat during the day that gets the warm end around 84. I usually use a moon light at night, and it keeps warm end around 80, but last night I didnt use that moonlamp and the temp dropped to 69 in the whole tank, I do not use a UTH and dont plan on one at this time....is 69 too cold at night? I would imagine not, since I believe in the AZ desert it probably gets cooler then this at nighttime....thanks

Hey,no its not too cold but your not going to want to get too much below that. And though where that snake is from may get colder you have to remember that most snakes out there have been domesticated for so long that you can't always compare them directly to the wild. But an under the tank heater is a really good idea; they are cheap (20 bucks cdn) and they are a life saver. If you keep your snake in the basement (which i keep all of mine) and your light goes out, your cage will get really cold but if you have an under the tank heater its no big deal the snake will just move to the heater if it is too cold. Just a suggestion.
