water snails. 2 new 3toed hatchings

patsy1 Mar 28, 2009 02:32 AM

Does anyone know if it is alright to feed water snails to bt? My 8 month old hatchlings will eat every one that I put in their water. It started by accident, now they come running for them.

Two 3toed eggs laid 12/18 finally hatched. They sure are darker in color then my fl/3toed intergrade. Will post pix when they finally venture out of their holes. Thanks/p

It is fine. My first hatchling....now just awakening from hibernation as an adult male....loved the aquarium pond snails when small. He would crunch up the shell and all. Funny, I have two yearlings right now that don't seem to care for them.

They can, but not necessarily will, carry parasites, but then again, so can just about everything they will eat if they are housed outside in an uncontrolled environment anyway. Is it something to worry about or should you stop feeding them?; probably not.

Thanks for the answers you two.
I know that the snails carry something that is hard on the Bufos here. Expecially toads that have been exposed to roundup & have immune problems.
But I wasn't sure about the turtles. (not that mine are exposed to roundup!)
I was out in turtle village today and found a hatchling that I released last fall. wowee, doubled in size. I am always throwing in slugs/snails/worms/etc and there are lots of roly polys. When I read about other peoples turtles that come running when they bring food, I'm always jealous cuz mine won't eat if I stay around. I guess that they get enough from hunting on their own...
I always enjoy reading your lists Jeff.

Snails can carry fungi, bacteria, virus, and nemotodes or worms, but so can minnows, amphibians, and insects. I don't feed those things myself i only offer reptomin, wardleys and occational fruit and veggies and worms, deer meat, but I know that they are eating whatever happens to come along in there cages outside anyway. Ever see what happens when a box turtle sees a small toad?

Got pictures?
I assume you mean they eat it.
We have large toads, Bufo, cane, or whatever they're called.
We have Koki frogs. Did you get to hear them when you were here? They are real irritating. They populate so densely that it is hard to hear human conversation over their's.
How do you prepare the deer meat? Makes my mouth water just thinking about it.

They go crazy ferocious over taods and yes they eat them.
Didn't get to here the frogs that you refer too?
The ground venison is used as a base mixed with chopped fruits and veggies and turtle sticks and mixed up and then rolled up into cookie dough sized balls, then frozen on a cookie sheet lined with wax paper. Then once frozen you can put the frozen balls in a zip lock baggy and put back in freezer, that way they won't stick togather. Then you can just take out how many balls you need the night before feeding to thaw for the next mornings feed. It's a convienent well balanced way to feed, kind of a variation of the old home-made fish and shrimp based frozen fish foods thats been in use forever, the garter snake people also use a version of this that is salmon or trout based instead.

Hmm I'd like to get that recipe. How many lbs of venison do you use in a batch? What other fruits and veggies do you use? What are turtle sticks?

I really eat alot of venison and have lots of ground venison from the elk I killed last year with my bow. It really is excellent low fat protein.

Here's some pics. Hope I don't offend anyone.

well are those toads poisonous?
our toads have some chemical component that makes my fox terrrier foam at the mouth every time he forgets and bites one.

toads do emit a toxic skin secretion (or sometimes referred to as venom) when provoked, to ward off most predators, however garter snakes and box turtles seem to be completely immune
