How often to change Aspen Bedding

rottenweiler9 Mar 29, 2009 03:49 PM

I am going to give this stuff another try. I like the looks and but last time I used the small chips and now I am went to the shredded stuff. How often do you replace the whole thing. I do spot clean and use the Novelx (SP).

Thank you

Jeff

I change out my bedding at least every two months or so but it all depends on the snake. In the summer when i pound them with food more they obviously deficate more so it needs changed out more often. Another of my guys spills his water a lot so his is changed out more often. Basicaly change it out when it needs it instead of on a set secdual.

We change out our bedding on our adults (newspaper) and juveniles (aspen) once per week, with spot cleaning as needed. That is a good rule of thumb to go by. Residual urates can't be spot cleaned easily, and can cause potential health problems. I am a fan of placing a folded sheet of wet paper towel in the enclosure of animals on aspen during a shed cycle to increase the ambient humidity.

Jordan

Why don't you use aspen for adults. I thought that was pretty common? I am actually giving it another shot, to bring up the humidity.

Different people have different situations--and for us--print free newspaper is the best choice. It is easy to keep sanitary, it is easy to increase the humidity with. It is easy to see the fecal matter and urates, and it is affordable. We buy it by the load, and it has worked very well for us.

Take care,

How do you keep the humidity up with using paper. I would love to go back to it but that is my issue.

Its no different than Aspen. If the ambient humidity is too low you can mist the cage, increase the water bowl size or provide a moist hide box. We use large bowls in our adult cages and don't suffer any issues with humidity. If you're in a colder or more dry state then you may need to add a humidifier to the room to have a good ambient humidity or you may want to provide a moist hide, or mist the cage once a week.

Just keep in mind Retics don't require high humidity, but bone-dry is not good!

take care,
Jordan

Is it a bad thing if a snake gets a mouth full of aspen bedding? my amel last time she eat she got a lot in here mouth i checked on her every like 15 min it took her a hour to get it out for her mouth would close. Should a go to newspaper or is it okay? and were do u get unprinted news paper?

speaking as a hobbyist it usually isnt a big deal, they take in tons of leaves, dirt, twigs, etc in the wild. speaking as a veterinary medicine guy, one big thing to worry about is impaction and it not being able to pass properly. the concern would be that if your snake for some reason doesnt feel normal and decided not to drink for a period of time, all that bedding would dry up from dehydration, and become unable to pass. i have seen this come in to my hospital a couple times, but its certainly not the norm. just make sure your snake is and stays healthy and drinks well, and all will be well
