Have you ever seen an URO in such a bad shape?

Flavia Guimaraes Sep 12, 2003 12:04 AM

When i bought him i thought he was fat because his belly was round.Arriving home i discovered he was inflating his belly to pretend he was bigger/stronger than he really was.So soon i discovered i was the new mom of a very thin, very weak uro that doesnt want to eat or to drink, that almost never open his eyes!

But an uro with an attitude!

That one somebody posted a few weeks (months?) ago that they got from Neil Gubitz. That broke my heart.

I had bought (knowing they were bad) 2 uro's from a pet store an then turned them in for neglect. Happy to say that we won that case!

But the one, was even thinner than the one you have. There was NO meat whatsoever. NONE. Just skin hangin off of bones. Very very sad. Fortunately, he has healed and now is quite plump and happy . The other one, was in such bad shape from being stuck laying a a soaking wet sand with no heat source or fresh veggies, that the scales on her feet rotted off as well as a portion of her underside. She was just rotting away till her skin was smooth and swollen. We were totally amazed that with daily treatment and therapy on her one foot, that she regained total movement of it again. Unfortunately she died earlier this year of unknown causes *

So yes..abuse is not something I am not aware of. Very sad..hope you can get him eating soon! Highly suggest some force feedings of baby food right away with vitamins mixed in. could possibly help save him!

good luck!

You won the battle against death! Can you tell me what you did to rehab your skinny one? So many people told me its almost impossible to rehab uros that im afraid i wont win that battle!

Thanks

To rehab mine, the one that had all the bloodiness I had to use neosporin on her wounds and excercise her foot. Weight wise she managed to be ok.

For the skinny one, I had to use a syringe and force feed baby foods. It took a while to get him to eat (hard to get that dang mouth open lol) but used the skinny end of one of those combs with the pointed ends and used it to kinda pry his mouth open. A vet can also be sure there are no parasites (microscopic esp) and can also give them a shot of vitamins for a boost.

Seemed to work well for me Also daily soaks helped to keep him hydrated well.
I hope you can save your little guy!!
good luck!

I already de-wormed mine and it seems to be improving a little.Perhaps i worry too much but that @#**!! baby food is always going out from its nose!If i make the baby soup too dry it doesnt enter the syringe!I wish it will start to eat by itself!!.I really dont like the process of squeezing it to make it open its mouth, injecting the baby soup without perforating its throat and after seeing half of the food going out by its nose! Rehabing my Beardie was a child's play compared to rehabing an uro!

I know exactly what u mean. I just started to force feeding 2 uros. I cant get the mouth open eather, and half the baby food taht goes into thier mouth comes out and all over me. With the soup and not being able to get in in the syringe i had the exact same problem. It took me 5 minutes just to get 3 cc of that in the syringe. At least we know we are saving uros and hopefully they will pull through.

I'm really pulling for both of you!!! I had the same problem with the food out the nose. Seemed to help if you just make sure you give only a wee bit at a time (mouths ARE quite small if you think about it! ) Maybe like 1/2 cc at a time. I know its time consuming no doubt. But worth it if it helps.

Wonderful if either of you tried giving wax worms, crickets, or dandilions? I know the crickets and worms aren't exactly a staple, but maybe it would help get them stimulated a little to want to eat. Mine goes nuts over dandilion blooms!

Just another idea that came to mind.

I'll keep pulling and praying for you guys!

Each time i see that tiny throat and that stubborn teeth that dont want to open i pray God to make my URO eat by himself!!I wish my URO's throat was as big as my beardie's throat but UROs have a tortoise shaped head! By the way i had the same problem with my Star tortoise when she got sick!
