Baytril Question?

cobrakeeper77 Mar 31, 2009 09:39 AM

Ok I`ll try one more time. I posted a question a few days ago but no one replied. My question is, when you are using baytril how often should you inject the snake, what dosage, and how long does it usually take to clear up?

Thanks,
Isaac

Baytril, in other animals, is usually a once-a-day medicine and takes up to a week to show effects. I have used it in cats, dogs, and mice, but not snakes yet.

If you need to ask that question then it is obvious that you are using a medication that can cause harm to your animal without a veterinarian's knowledge or prescription. If your animal had been seen by a vet and prescribed the medication then the vet would have told you what you needed to know on how to treat the animal with the baytril.

Your vet will more than likely give you syringes pre-filled with the correct dosage based on the weight of your animal. The dosage of Baytril for ball pythons is usually 10/mg per kg (1,000 grams) of body weight. Every day for 10 days.

An inch or so below the spine into the muscle and alongside the body is the proper route of the syringe. A noticeable bulge will develop at the injection site and a slight discharge of the medicine will occur from the site as well - this is completely normal and to be expected. Alternate the injection site every time you administer meds via a syringe. Right side, left side, right side and so on each time you have to inject your ball python with meds. Do not guide the syringe on a downward angle as this can cause serious damage and possibly puncture the lung.

If you’ve completed your final administration of meds and your ball python still has RI, you need to contact your vet right away. He or she will more than likely try a different medicine to see if it will be more effective at treating the infection.

In conclusion, as noted above and reiterated here again, observe how your vet is administering the meds and ask them any questions you might have when you’re there with your ball python. The only stupid question is the one you don’t ask your vet.

Clear what up? An RI? Take your snake to the vet - have him do a swab and find out what meds the snake actually needs -- the vet will be able to show you how to properly administer the drug.

Good luck!

The vet visit shouldn't be that expensive. I just took a juvenile in with what looked like a sinus infection (he was getting a little puffy in front of his eyes). Vet gave me 5 injections of baytril the office visit and it was only 22 dollars....

Baytril is NOT always the best way to go. Baytril is a fantastic but a very evasive drug and has even been known to eat holes at the injection site of reptiles. You should not be self medicating your snakes with Baytril!! You need to have them seen by a vet. If you are trying to treat an RI, Baytril may not be the right medication for your case.

IF you are fortunate enough to obtain a supply of Baytril (it is prescription only from a vet) you should have instructions on how to use it. You must know how to calculate the dosage which includes knowing HOW much to give per body weight of the animal. You also have to know the percent of the drug mix too. It is not easy to calculate unless you know what you are doing. You need guidance from whomever gave you the Baytril. ASK!

By the way, I should add that Baytril doses vary from Reptile to Reptile... for example a Burm/Retic is a different milligram per body weight than a ball python or a leopard gecko, etc.

Please be careful.
