A question about Russel's vipers.......

oreganus Sep 12, 2003 12:38 AM

This is my russel's viper, she is of chinese locale. She seems to be growing lengthwise very fast and somewhat in girth. I have a naval medical guide with this species in it and it says she will get roughly 39" long. My question is how girthy will she get. I have other russel's from other parts of the world, but this is my first time with a chinese specimen. Will she get as heavy as some of the other locales? She doesn't seem to be as big around as some of my others have been. She is a wonderful snake and probably one of my favorites, I would just like to know a little bit more about her potential for size. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks
Kevin

Kevin,
Sorry I can't help you with your question but I just wanted to say that that is a beautiful snake. I have a male of the real nice contrasty russelli russelli. He has been an awesome snake eating well and doing super with no problems. The Russells Viper has become my favorite venemous snake. What other locales do you have and have you attempted to breed any?

Thanks,
Dan

I've always wanted to hear what these are like in captivity as far as temperment, feeding, etc.

Not planning on getting any but just curious since they have such a reputation in the wild.

The ones I have raised were quick to coil up and hiss loudly but rarely struck. As they got older they have become perfect little hots. They ride a hook very well, eat like champs, and make great display animals. They have'nt hissed for several months even though I move them to a temporary container for cage cleaning every other week. They are my favorite venemous and have been an absolute joy to work with although they do pack a punch. My animals were captive born and I acquired them very young.
