Any Spilotes Breeding Updates?

BillyBoy Mar 31, 2009 12:33 PM

Anyone have any breeding activity with their Spilotes? I finally seem to have something going on with my big pair - lots of "cuddling" the last few days. Almost constant as a matter of fact. They are up on a shelf that is mostly blocked from viewing so I can't tell if there is anything more going on, but I'm taking this as a good sign since for the last couple of years, they are typically on opposite sides of the cage. In preparation for the spring warmup, I bought a gallon pump sprayer so I could really soak the heck out of them, so I don't know if that is pushing them in the right direction, but I remember some of you saying that heavy, heavy misting seems to stimulate them. Fingers crossed. Anyone else with any Spilotes news? Seems the cribos are all doing their thing this spring too.

Well, our mexicanus have been together for about three months, and are just now showing some "cuddling" type behavior. The female has been investigating the nesting box as well, so I'm hopeful even though they are young......

Best of luck with them Brad! I'm sure I'm not alone when I say I would LOVE to see some cbb mexicanus on the market.

On another note, I happened to swing by my house during the day yesterday and saw both animals out and about and the female had some "evidence" on her back of a breeding attempt. Poor aim on the part of my big boy maybe?

I think we can all relate to that one....

Bill I think most of these Arboreal snakes have massive Hemi's to lock in on the females, it makes since for how far the male probe, of the breeders of Spilotes I've talked to I hear they are very well endowed and pump those girls full...If you see snail trails I have high hopes.

How old are they Brad?

brhaco Apr 03, 2009 08:09 AM

"06 hatch.....The male is about 7.5, the female just at 6 feet.

One trio is acting very promising. When "rained" they now race side by side in pairs...some even ravel upside down and push themselves along w/their tail. This frantic, almost manic behavior lasts for about 30 minutes or so then they settle down.

The females are looking "plump" ...not nearly as tapered towards the vent as before...but they're still feeding readily so I'm stumped!
