Termites from Grapewood???

sbradp Mar 31, 2009 10:20 PM

Help! I just noticed that I have a termite infestation in one of my boa cages. Only origin I can figure out is new piece of grapewood purchased at the Feb 7/8th NARBC show. Does anybody have suggestions on how to eradicate them?

I have removed all the aspen from both cages and removed the wood furnishings as well. I guess the guys will be on bare newspaper for a while.

I'm still interested in hearing any ideas how to sterilize the wood pieces though. I have removed them to outside in sealed trash bags at the moment.

Thanks!

Their are several ways you could do it. Water imersion and baking are both safe ways that do not use chemicals, I prefer heating as termites need a fairley controled environment to live.

Bake wood items at 250-275 degrees for about 30 minutes. This kills off anything living inside the wood. This works on wood even from your own back yard. I would recommend removing bark from collected samples.
