CT Ban Update

EricWI Mar 31, 2009 11:34 PM

A version of House Bill No. 6552 with substitute language cleared the Environment Committee by a 28-2 vote on March 20 and was referred to the Office of Legislative Research and the Office of Fiscal Analysis for review. Once that is complete, it could come before the House for a vote.

The crazy thing is that CT ALREADY requies an importation permit for all wildlife, whether native or not. There are exceptions for certain species that are common in the pet trade and don't pose a risk to native species. I was told (when trying to place turtles into CT) to contact the CT Department of Environmental Protection to see if the adopter could obtain an import permit. One of the contacts for an imporation permit is Dale May, Director, CTDEP Wildlife Division, Dale.May@ct.gov

I don't see the CT DEP giving a permit for a primate in a private house hold.

I am going to take some time to call local pet stores and any other people that have animals I know. I would bet many of them do not even know about this.
People from HCU and other groups should try to get an article out in as many papers as possible to get pet owners to get on this and give the people in charge heck !
Hey, the more people there are to voice there dislike of this the better. Also the more power it gives animal keepers by standing together. Eric

I would like to thank Tracy Barker for bringing this issue to my attention.

Latest is that the House probably won't get 'round to this one during the current legislative session.

Just exactly why . . . seems to vary, depending on who you're listening to. Some say it's so that the Commerfords of Goshen can keep their elephants, while others report that it's due to the legislature's prolonged budget debate.

I'm keepin' my ears open - 'cause I don't trust politicians.

I can tell you this doesnt look good... or is it the same as it always was with wolves and whatnot added in. I take it to look like we cant bring anything in and need a permit for everything we already have... hoping I am wrong...
