I picked up this 1.1 pair of Cal Kings today for an incredible deal. They are tiny little guys, and I am thinking they have been on maintenance diets until now.

I didn't have any fuzzies to offer last night, but I offered the little guys 3 pinks each and they both chugged them down...I could have probably offered more, but I really didn't want to chance regurgitation...........I was more than happy they ate within the first 15 minutes of bringing them back to my place.

I thought I'd show some pics..........the 50:50-ish Cal King has a very odd pattern and it reminds me of Tom's that he posted a couple of threads below this.

I do have a question for FR :

I have been giving a lot of thought into raising this pair together, but I am a little hesitant to attempt this without a good bit of pointers from you. Would you be inclined to help me get started about doing this please? Any advice offered would be appreciated. Thanks.

OH yeah and Doug.......WAKE UP!!!!! It's April!

That 1st cal king has the coolist pattern i have ever seen.
Not to open a old can of worms but whats the upside of housing kingsnakes together ? We all know the potential downside.

PS Thks' 4 the wakeup call.

Really? In all honesty I bought the pair for the other one...LOL! It was either one for $25 or both for $40, so I took the pair.

Honestly, I've been curious about the cohabiting aspect ever since Frank has been talking about how raising the snake together will allow for successful cohabitation of adults...........most of us laugh at the thought of trying to cohabit, but I feel it's kind of ignorant to outright dismiss something if I have no personal experience with it.

I've been keeping kings separate for awhile now..... getula, calligaster and mexicana. I'd like to say I've done a good job............no breeding, but then again, I've never attempted to breed as I'm not a fan of myself making hybrids or crosses with any of the ssp I currently have.

This will in fact be my first 1.1 pair of the same subspecies and I WOULD like to try my hand at breeding them down the road (they are unrelated to). When I first joined these forums all I ever saw were threads about FR talking about cohabiting and how it is extremely effective with snakes raised together..........I have a pair and am willing to see if I can achieve anything close to the same success that he apparently has had.

I still don't know for sure if I will try putting them together........but I'd like the information there in case I do.

I dont like the look od a 50/50 or a high white cal king.Only my opinion.I do like about 60/40 blk white if the black is real dark and the white is very white.

Your snake has real cool jagged saddles and is real bright. Can you try your experiment on some other kings? I want to see what those two produce in 4 years.

That one with the jagged saddles is a male......and I already have a 2 year old 60:40 female Cal King

In your opinion, what would be a better pairing........that male to the white female I previously posted or my other Cal King?

Here's my "old" Cal King...she should be ready to breed in a year or a little more.

LOL, I prob will....but I have no idea about predicting the patterns of the offspring when the two polygenetic traits are crossed.

Since I will have a trio of 1.2 in a few years, the male would easily be able to sire clutches to both females right?

How long do you guys wait to let snakes breed? I've heard one year or until they reach like three-four feet.

indictment Apr 02, 2009 12:12 AM

I've never bred before LOL!

I've heard people mention the rule of 3 : 3 years old, 300 grams, 3 ft long.

obviously males can produce offspring once they reach sexual maturity.

And obviously the age isn't as important because snakes grow differently when they are subjected to different husbandry.

I want a broken/jagged banded cal king when you have a clutch.

Those are great looking little CalKings. IMHO no honest-to-God snake keeper's collection should be without @ least one Cal King. Best of luck w/ them.
