Eric East Apr 01, 2009 06:02 PM

I just got home and checked on my girl & she has laid 3 eggs so far.
She shed 20 days ago. This is her first clutch and my first time breeding Indigos. Now the praying begins!!!!

A little excited are we? Congratulations, that is great and a reflection on the good husbandry you have provided. Let us know what happens in about 95-115 days..."patience grasshopper"...Vic H, in the same boat since Feb. 10th with 10 eggs.

Yes, i'm very excited but a little concerned too; she hasn't passed anymore eggs. I hope she's just taking a break and not egg bound!!!

Twenty for hours have passed and she has not laid anymore eggs.
I know there are at least 2 more to go. How long should I give her to pass them???!!!

How long should you give her? Before what?
Give her as long as it takes. If you have not done so already, make sure she has a dark and secure nest box with moist substrate and don't bother her for a day or more, even to check in. When you do check on her, keep it subtle and wihtout too much disturbance.
On the long term - I have had colubrids retain eggs for months and then pass them without issue.
I would definately recommend you do not try to 'assist' her in passing them.
Good luck.

I was wondering about seeking assistance from a vet. I too have had other colubrids get egg bound but have usually massaged the eggs out. I don't want to do that with this girl.
Maybe i'm paranoid but I have heard too many horror stories about indigos and egg binding.

Hi Eric,

I'm wondering how things worked out with your gravid female. I hope all is well and she passed the remaining eggs safely.

Thanks for asking! We're still battling the situation.

She had 2 eggs at the vent and 3 others up higher. We aspirated the first two eggs. The first egg was a dud & we hardly got anything out of it but the 2nd one yielded about 150cc. Since the first egg was a dud we were concerned that she would not pass it so I gently massaged it out.

The following morning I noticed that she had passed the 2nd egg on her own and that one of the other eggs had moved to the vent. I was hopeful that she would pass it, but did not, so we aspirated it as well and she passed it.

Last night, another of the remaining eggs had also moved to the vent but she still has not passed it so I will be aspirating it tonight and most likely will have to do so with the last egg as well once it moves down.

5 eggs aspirated makes for one VERY expensive omelet!

The good news is she seems to be doing well and even ate a small meal. The 3 eggs that she did pass all look good!

Good luck with the 3 good eggs and I hope she recovers with no problems after the remaining eggs pass.

As much as I love reptiles I have to say they can certainly induce some stress on their keepers!
