Trying to get good design ideas for my Frilled Dragon's new cage. Right now he is in a 75 gallon tank and just about to outgrow it. Help me out... thanks!

One basic hull - two different styles of cages.

Sliding glass door cage:

Drop-down door cage:

Cabinet-grade plywood sealed with water-bourne polyurethane. Instead of using the full 8ft length I had to cut 'em down to 7ft so I could fit two stacks, 4 high, in a particular area. They're 7ft x 3ft x 21in.

Have fun!

diggin the sliding glass doors, where did you get them from?

HappyHillbilly Apr 02, 2009 10:22 PM

Once I formed the opening, basically installing a litter dam, I took the cage to a local glass shop & had them cut & install the track & sliding glass doors. They charged me about $140. They sit on rollers and don't just slide along the track.

That was the first one I built. On the 2nd one I decided to try drop-down doors to see which style suited my needs & desires the best. While I saved about $125 on the drop-down door cage I had more building time invested. Definitely two different styles as far as appearance & functionality goes. I think I like the drop-down doors better. For both, appearance and functionality.

I see that Randy posted a photo of the condo he built. He put a lot of details in that condo. More than I put in my shanties. One thing he did was on the bottom cages he made the doors with removable hinges - to where the doors can drop down but also can be lifted up & out of the way.

Catch ya later!

I am really interested in those European style cages. With the connectors and parts you can custom make anything!

Are you in the USA?

I haven't found those here, but I'd like to build some of that style.

tokaysrnice Apr 05, 2009 12:21 PM

Yeah I'm in the US. There are several companies who make the aluminum extrusions.

Gorgeous cage! Looks very pleasing to sit back and enjoy!
Is that similar to the Q-Block cages in OZ? What is the black "trim" on the inside between the aluminum and the white plastic?

Here's a picture of three cages I built in a stack. The top is three feet with a flip down door.
The middle is four feet with sliding glass.
The bottom is seven feet with rolling glass just after it was finished.

The seven foot cage is big enough to decorate nicely and offer different substrates.
There are two shelves along the back for more crawl space.
In this picture there is a whole piece of sod in the cage (it is in a plastic tray- HomeD epot) which is an aid when my snake is getting ready to shed I put it in there. So much room is nice!

The top cage was built 10 years ago wow time flies for my female JCP, the bottom cage was built with my father when I was 14 and was just retired 3 years ago. The top cages measures roughly 40x32x24(LxHxW) the bottom cage was 48x32x24. They were sitting on an old Iguana cage my father and I built when I was 8 or so, no pics but that was about 48x24x36. Here is an older pic.
