Is this plant OK for beardies?

JeffreyPeacock Apr 02, 2009 04:38 PM

I put this plant in yesterday and noticed my bearded dragon has taken a liking to it. I searched online for "Exotic Angel Plant" which is what the tag says is the type of plant it is and nothing came up that was suspect so I put it in. He's been munching on it here and there and I just wanna make sure that its not toxic.

I would say get that plant out of there right now!
I don't know the name in english, but in french it's called a "croton"...I found the latin name "Codiaeum". There are a lot of different variety, but it is known to be a toxic plant, in particular it's sap, it's bark and it's root.
I don't want to alarm you, but it could be really dangerous to let your dragon eat it.

OMG!!!!! I wish they labeled this plant correctly damnit... my bearded dragon has eaten about 3-4 full leaves and she is only about 6 inches SVL. Should I take her to the vet? She seems perfectly normal and I just gave her a bath and she usually drinks when I bathe her and she drank a bunch... Is there anything I can do now? Feed her? Give her some romaine lettuce.. romaine lettuce seems to give her diarhea so i never give it to her but maybe thats what she needs now.

I have a Bromeliad in the cage as well, these are safe right? I did research before I bought it and i found a few sites that said it was safe but i just want to be sure.

This is a site wich lists the edible plants for reptiles : http://www.anapsid.org/resources/edible.html
and an other about the suitable plants for reptile habitats:
http://exoticpets.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?zi=1/XJ&sdn=exoticpets&cdn=homegarden&tm=17&f=10&tt=12&bt=1&bts=1&zu=http%3A//www.anapsid.org/resources/plants2.html

For your BD now...I don't know. A lot of dog/cat website suggest to consult a vet immediately if the animal eats a toxic plant. Maybe you can call your vet and see what he suggests you. I really don't know what else to do. Your animal can be just fine, but I wouldn't take any chance.

hum, I guess he knows more about animals than plants (and I hope so!).
This is what I found : http://www.health.qld.gov.au/poisonsinformationcentre/plants_fungi/codiaeum.asp
and this one is more precise about what happens if ingested (but in french) : http://lesraidsforum.chez-alice.fr/plantes/appartement2.htm

Anyways, I guess there is nothing else to do at the moment except keeping an eye on your animal.

I think the best idea would be to insure the plants you place in your animals cage are safe before hand. Good luck though hope your beardie is fine. If your beardie already ate it there is not much you can do just let it pass and move on.

It is never safe to put any plant into a dragon's cage or any animal for that matter till you know first, that it is non toxic. Also, even if its a safe plant, often the insecticides, fertilizers etc put into and on the plant can be toxic.

As you said your dragon has already eaten several leaves...if it was toxic, it would have shown noticeable indications.
