Collapsible hatchling rack?

jamesalternafan Apr 03, 2009 06:17 PM

Does anyone know of a product like this? For me it only gets used 3-4 months a year and I would like to disassemble and reasemble each year without wear and tear being too great on the rack. Is there a product like this that will work for me? Maybe someone has an idea or suggestions.

The one product that comes to my mind is the Vision hatchling rack. I know it's shipped in parts and therefore one should be able to take it apart.

I also mention it because it is one commercial rack that should be secure enough for baby L. alterna, which is what I assume is one species you keep. A friend of mine has kept very small hatchlings in his.

But that's a lidless rack. If you're looking for a rack where the lids stay on the boxes then you'll have to check with some of the various companies that ship their racks flat pack, which seems to be more and more common.

I have been thinking of something similar. I am starting to get supplies and such so I can breed my leopard geckos. I will need to get several racks. I was thinking I wont really need a hatchling rack for the whole year. Mostly racks for adults and mabie a small rack for juvies. I figure get a rack like the 15 quart racks and just use those for hatchlings & juvies. Take the 15 quart tubs out and use those 6 quarts or whatever quart tubs those are for hatchlings and just use them with lids. Then when you dont need the hatchlings one you can use it for juvies. I guess the size you need depends on what your breeding but its an idea I was thinking of since I dont think I will need "hatchling" rack for the whole year. Get double use out of one rack.

Or even take a few tubs out of one of your adult racks. Use the smaller and less tall little 6 or whatever quart tubs with the lids on for hatchlings and then when you dont need the hatchling tubs anymore put the adult tubs back in and use them for adults or sub adults, juvies, whatever.

My concern is that without knowing much about the assembly or actually viewing the connections I will not know how well they will hold up. Exessive wear and tear on the construction and deconstruction of the rack are my concern.(Ex stripping screws, slipping pins, not all that familiar with how these racks actually lock together or if it will wear down from disassembly).

Maybe someone has some experience with a rack that might work?
Thanks in advance

Best bet is a rack that uses 3/8" or 1/2" material and is back-wall heated. Repti-Racks makes such a rack, as does pvccages.com, at least for hatchlings.

Do not overtighten the screws, just gently screw them in. This way, they can be removed and replaced with minimal wear. Back-wall heating makes it easier to disassemble.

I meant to have said that the Vision rack is the most break-down-friendly rack design. My advice above is if you were considering an expanded closed cell PVC rack.
