red tail boa cage

tbone21 Apr 04, 2009 11:09 AM

Looking at animal plastic and boaphile 4 foot cages. Anyone have experience with them and what they would recommend? I know this has been posted before but having trouble finding answers.

The boaphile cages are really great, alothough if you have a very large female and would prefer to go 2 1/2' feet or 3' deep/wide you will need to go with animal plastics. Both are great, I kind of wish Jeff would start making say a 6' x 2 1/2' x 18".

Here's a few dumb questions, but is the Boaphile or AP 4' cage big enough for an adult female? Will they breed comfortably or is a larger encloser needed? What's the average size most people use?

Haha that's funny, I was just looking at your post on Repticzone. I love my boaphile, I have zero complaints on it!! I don't have an animal plastics cage though, so I couldn't tell you anything about those. The timing of my order was better than expected, Jeff is a great guy and his cages are flawless!

LOL ya I am on both forums. What size is the cage you have pictured? How is the heat? Which choice of their heat tape do you have one it? How sturdy is it? Do you recommend the key locks? and do you think a middle lock is needed? Sorry for all the questions lol?

I can be done....but please don't keep a snake larger than six feet in a four foot cage.

Take care,

Kevin

For anything over 6' I use 8' cages, especially when breeding.

The cages I have are the 421D cages, they are 4X2X1 I believe. I ordered the 1.5 belly heat, since my room isn't that hot. (You will need a heater in your room if it's 20 degrees cooler than your hot spot. Mine isn't.)I love my keyed locks, sometimes kids come over and I don't want them messing with the snakes lol... or just people in general. I don't think you'll need a middle lock unless you own hots (or so it says on the boaphile website lol) but I think the front is so sturdy that a snake wouldn't be able to slip out (unless you're putting like, tiny corns in that cage LOL). If you have any more questions, feel free to ask away

Tom,

Both of the cages you mentioned in your post are light years better than was around in the early 90s, but I think it would be worth your while to consider Vision cages as well. They might be more expense - but will last forever and no cage give you better visibility and ventilation. Also – nothing looks better….my personal opinion.

Take care,
Kevin

I only own AP so I cant say much about boaphile other then I hear they tend to sag over time.

If you heat your reptile room you will have allot less problems then I did. I purchased the heat cord version and with the room kept in the low 60s heat cord couldn't keep up. So I had to go with a RHP which does the job. I also used a 2" blue board under the cage for added insulation. The ventilation in these cages is little to none, however it is easy enough to add more if needed. The window tends to stick sometimes and it takes a weekly cleaning just to keep the acrylic clean/sliding. I wish I purchased the longer cage for my guy but for now this will have to do.

Here is 2 year old pic.
