Snake blindness?

swallowedthefly Apr 04, 2009 08:53 PM

I have what I assume is an '07 cal king purchased from a local pet store. She's always had a little difficulty feeding but lately its gotten worse. she strikes at her prey and completely misses. after a little while passes I think she just gives up and leaves her meal alone.

I feed her live adult mice, and she is fully capable of handling them, but sometimes she just seems confused. Is she just dumb or may she actually not be able to see?

If its a albino, they sometimes have trouble seeing good.
It might be getting ready to go in to shed.
Check its eyes for unshed eye caps that didn't come off.
If you have it in a glass tank, sometime they see reflections in the glass which confuses it.
Good Luck, Bob

Under the assumption you are feeding pre killed or f/t - try putting your snake in a closed cereal box with the food item (you could also try a smaller mouse with this) and check on it after about an hour - if it hasnt eaten give the snake another hour or 2, but first of course check the heat. -

Was the snake fed FT before you got it? Sometimes if they don't ever learn to strike and constrict they are pretty bad at it.

Either way if your snake misses when he strikes you should NOT be feeding him live prey. A snake that is healthy is still at risk for being bitten.
