Tub question

Paco84 Apr 05, 2009 05:13 AM

Does anyone keep critters in tubs using only lids for security? I thought if it was safe I could make my own rack for next to nothing. I figured I could heat a shelving unit with flexwatt and place the tubs into position. However, Doing this will leave a foot or more of space between shelves. So with smaller species of snake could it be possible to have just lids for security? Thanks.

Unfortunately most lids don't fit securely enough to use them without some sort of added protection (whether it is another tub stacked ontop, or in some cases people will bungie cord or rubberband them as well, or my prefered method if using lidded, use a shelf that the tubs fit smoothly but snugly into.) With that it can become rather tiring to use them in that situation. If you have a low number of animals it can work though as the extra work doesn't add up that much.

I have over 40 Rubbermaids with small ball feet all over my place, stacked 3-4 high, with lids. Big tubs for adults, med. and small tubs for smaller snakes. Have one 4 unit rack, a 5 unit on the way, and one BP vision. I may experiment by "shaving" the feet to fit racks I do have. I'm not throwing these racks out, but getting something built in my neighborhood is almost impossible.
Everything has to be a "Pièce de résistance". Prices are as bad as baseball tickets too. I have plenty of air holes in the sides and top, so air circulation is no problem, plus keeping colubrids doesn't require all to be heated. The racks I do have came with heat anyway.
