Milwaukee-Reptiles confiscated

Snakes, crocodile removed from south side home
A stash of exotic animals, including a five-foot Nile crocodile, a 14-foot reticulated python and four snapping turtles, were removed from a home on Milwaukee's south side Friday afternoon, officials said.

Police discovered the reptiles when they went to the residence in the 1300 block of S. 22nd St. shortly before 1:30 p.m., Milwaukee police spokeswoman Anne E. Schwartz said.

The owner of the critters was cooperative and was not cited for any violations, Schwartz said.

According to an official at the Milwaukee Area Domestic Animal Control Commission shelter, the other confiscated creatures were a 10-foot yellow anaconda, a 6-foot carpet python, a 5-foot red tail boa constrictor, a 4-foot green anaconda, a 3-foot rock python, a 3-foot Asian water monitor and a 2-foot Savannah monitor.

The animals, which were being housed at the shelter late Friday, appeared to be in good condition, though it had not been determined what would become of them, the official said.

Such animals are illegal in the city, police said.

The only truly illegal animals were the monitor lizards and the crocodilians. It is illegal to maintain carnivorous lizards in the city of Milwaukee. The snake law is written more discretionary. It is up to the opinion of the police officer at the time of arrival. This can be subject to improper caging for a species (ie too small or escapable of larger species or things such as venomous snakes). All of the animals appear to be in good health however it was suggested that one of the snakes is sick.

So basically everything was seized because of the owner having illegal lizards. All but the Nile Crocodile have been transferred out to rescue.

Hi Cindy,

We are trying to give that croc a home. We'll see how it goes.

Sincerely,
Chris
