Salmon strips acceptable?

Lia Apr 05, 2009 11:30 AM

Hello
When a garter snake will simply not take pinkies rather than just feed rosy reds which it does love can earthworms and salmon fish strips help round out the dirt?

I know only rosy reds can equal thiamin problems .

Thank you

Lia

Earthworms are a fantastic food, but I would nix the salmon strips-Saltwater fish in general should be avoided as food for fish eating herps (other than sea snakes )

Why not heat the rosy reds first, to neutralize the enzyme?

The Avalanche has already started-it is too late for the pebbles to vote....

salmon has been used by many of us garter breeders without any problems. fish from salt water don't have the salt in them.... trout is another good one to use. gold fish and rosies can cause definite problems.

Take the pinky, cut off the front legs, if the snake is real small cut off all 4 legs and pinch the head to make it smaller, then take a fish net and scoop up a bunch of rosies in it, pull the net out of the water, put the pinkie in the net, let the rosies flop around on the pinkie for a 30secs or so, then grab the pinkie with a forceps or your CLEAN fingers if you don't have forceps, put the fish back in the water, then slowly place the pinkie an inch or so in front of the garter, ideally in front of the hide hole without disturbing the snake, then walk away and leave the snake undesturbed for several hours or overnight ideally. Try this, bet the garter will take it.

Thanks have a few frozen pinkies left will try it in week as garter ate today and want to try it when he is hungry.
The rosy reds come out of yard pond so easy enough to try .

Use trout if you can, Trout contains no thiaminase and is a freshwater fish. My garters LOVE trout.
