ASF illegal???

exoticball Apr 05, 2009 12:53 PM

I was doing some research on ASF's and I found a site that said that they are illegal in the state of MO, Ken and Cal. I was just wondering if they really are illegal in these states and if so why?

Also I was wondering if they are illegal in the state of Wis.

Thanks,
Matt

Yes they are illegal in some states - why - because they are considered injurious wildlife - if they were to escape they could easily survive and create a wild population that could potentially destroy the native wildlife.

Check with your state fish and wildlife department -- I don't think they are as I know a lot of people in WI that have them.

I had no idea they were illegal, I live in MO and they have been sold at the reptile shows here without problems. Hmm oh well.

Yah, I am a little confused with MO as well because I according to http://www.sapphiretigress.com/Softfurs.htm they are illegal; however, one of the local pet stores in Springfield is trying to sell them. Apperently they thought these would be good pet rats, until their staff started reaching in the cage to get one out and they found out they nip. LOL!

Now the staff is scared to even sell them.

Nobody probably checked the local laws and not all laws are vigorously enforced.

ASFs can be handled but they have to be socialized like any other rodent. When I had some I had no problem picking them up and interacting with them...but the person I bought them from, they handled them regularly so they were hand tame.

ASFs are not illegal in Mo, You are however required to have an exotic animale breeders licence to sell them.
