multiple snake regurge problem

pinelandsghost Apr 05, 2009 07:48 PM

I've last fed my collection on 4/2 now three days later I find that not one or two but six snakes have regurged thier meal???
All were fed light to moderately depending on thier size.
I've had my snake room kept at 73-74 degrees with the digital gauge mounted about 4.5' up from the floor. Using the lazer hand unit I checked the ceiling temp which was around 79-80 degrees.
All that regurged were rat snake species. All were left alone after feeding. About a dozen others that were fed that day from the same thawed feeder mice are fine. (Well so far, knock wood)
Any thoughts? I'm at a loss other than to wonder if the temps are too high.???
Mike.

best news is that its probably not a virus or bacteria spread from one snake to another if they all regurged on the same day.
more likely temps too high or bad food. was this a new batch of
F/T food? were the rodents clean in the bag or did it look like the bag may have been defrosted and frozen again??? do you have a thermostat connected to your heat element that could have malfunctioned????

more like temps too low.
Do you have any individual tank temperature control or only room temps?
Could be bad mice but if North American rats, 74 is a little low for average temps for digestion.
set the room temp at around 80F and after giving the snakes about 10 days, feed them again and see if they keep their meals down. It's impoprtant to give them time to recover.
If you have different species with different temperature requirements you need to have individual enclosure temperature control. Undertank heaters, heat tape something to allow each animal to get the temperatures it needs.

74 sounds too low for digestion. The cage temps/ambient air in the herp area should be around 78-80 degrees if you are doing whole room heating. I set my heater thermostat mid level on the wall and set it at 80. If you keep it that low you will probably need heat tape on the back of their cages to give them a warm spot around 80-85 to go to if they need it.

Thanks guys, I fed from a fresh batch of frozen feeders picked up about 40 days ago. I also have 4" heat tapes from the bean farm running under all of my tanks that I moniter at about 95 degrees on the strip which reaches the tanks heating at about 85 degrees for a warm spot in each.
So I figuered with a room heater kept set at 74 degrees (digital thermometer mounted midway up on the wall)and with the heat tapes under the tanks I'd be good to go.There are no drafts, of that I'm certain. I'm baffled by this.
The other snakes that fed that day were a small bull, japanese rats, albino Black rat(all these ate a heavy meal)a cal king, corns, assorted other rats, and mandarins.(the mandarins don't have the heat tape)
All these have been good. Even a female albino black rat that has been regurging managed to keep a small crawler down. She and the rest of my group have been treated with panacur for possible parasites. This was done weeks ago and have eaten since without problem. Its the kind of problem that makes me worry and wonder if its worth it.

when me snakes are around 82 to 84 degrees they seem happy...under 80 they run around and hug the front for heat....over 86 they start to look around and duck for cover...not all, but some....even my knoblochi and pyro like it over 80.....the only snake I have that I think is happy at under 80 is the cave rats/ridleyi........

.........shoot for 82

(I heat the whole room.......)

Ok, I'll bump the heat up some. I heat the whole room too but run heat tapes as well. Do you as well?
This is done to accomidate those like mandarins that like it cooler. I keep them without heat tape on the lowest level.
I have a white lip python that is in a vision cage that runs a little warmer 85-90 degrees.
