Could be worse....

My first litter of 2009 dropped today. Looks like two healthy babies, two more with large yolks (jury out on those two for sure), 5 stillborn preemies and 11 slugs. Mom is fine, even gave me a little attitude when I opened the cage. I'm thinking she'll get next year off.

This was an odd year for her, not by any book I've read, I had her due date at either 02/17 or 05/14 from her sheds, duh, both were wrong!!

Oh yeah, this was Candy (Pastel CBLT), bred by a young male Van (Cherry Salmon). Will keep you updated on the four live ones.

Bummer for your first litter of the year, but I'm sure you'll have some good ones to make up for it! :P
Good luck with those four kids, hopefully the two yolk bellies come through ok for ya!

Hey Dave,

Sorry to hear about the premies and slugs, but glad there were a couple little squirmers in there for ya! Hope they all pull through. I'm happy to hear that Candy is doing good.

Good luck with the rest of your projects!

So far all four are doing well. Still concerned with the two large yolkers. Today I removed the yolks, one was easy, no bloodflow so was a simple matter of pinching off the umbilical and cutting through the pinch point. Number four (my most worrysome baby) was the hardest, still had bloodflow in the umbilical so had to tie it off first then cut away the yolk.

#1, had a little knob at the end of the umbilical so cut that away while I was at it.

#2, cleared and retracted it's own umbilical, so far the most active

#3, Yolker

and #4, really don't know if this one will make it or not. You can see the thread tying off the end, will remove the thread tonight after it clots up better, BEFORE it gets pulled inside.

Both the yolkers are now more active now that the anchor is gone.

Sorry to hear that Dave. Hey,atleast you have 3 healthy ones and one hopeful. Hopefully they'll be how you expected them to be and then it won't be all that bad. I wish even one survived for me but what can you do. I'm sure the Boa Gods will be better to you next time around. Goodluck with the rest of your season and chin up!

More updates, just checked in on them and #4 was giving me attitude, hissing and striking. IMO a really goood sign. Both of the yolkers are showing improvement now that the yolks are cut away. Both are cruising the tub and just look more lively!!

Nope, only 13 BCI breeder females. That leaves only 12 to go and a few are not "clearly" gravid, could be small litters or not gravid at all.

It's my BRB breeder females that number 21 this year.

And yes, I am a bit crazy!!!
