okay so i finally got arount to working on my side project this weekend and snaped a few "progress" pictures. i ordered sliding glass doors and i have 3/4 stalk for door framing. i thought that 3/4 would work prefect with the 7/8 face frame that has a 1/8 radius, flush it on the inside and the 3/4 would caome square just to the inside of the radius and would look good.... well that only works in a perfect world, its more like a 3/16 radius so my nice square edge overhangs and looks aweful, but i can take it to work and mill it down to 11/16 or even 5/8 to be sure(i thought i had pictures showing that but i guess not sorry)
so i start off with all prep work, such as removing the lower back pannels (the top part was open) there where a few places that needed to be sucked tighter together so a little reinforcement with screws does the trick...
there was one damaged section down low on the side. that was fixable i was able to cut that part out and replace it with something solid

there is base moulding for the unit which was the first thing i took off to get at the damaged part, what i will do from here is cut the legs shorted so the base will cover the ugly.
on oll of the inside seams in the upper section i am building up with Rock Hard. that is a seam filler alot like bondo mix it up with water its sandable and paintable and accepts stain. the face frame is at 45 degree angle to the side peices, however instead of mitering both the side are cut at a 45 and the face frame is square leaving ugly ply wood endgrain, and that i aslo took care of with rock hard

okay so so far everything is going good i was talked into going with the Repti-shield for the inside and after a bit of back and forth with myself as far as color black or clear... i said screw it mak it easy just go with black that way it doesnt matter whay the ply looks like under as long as its flat and smooth.... (that was the thinking that brought about my mistake) so i got some 3/8 sanded underlayment, it looked good the 1/4 was a little flimsy for my likeing and the 3/8 wasnt all that much more expensive. not wanting to take too much stuff to work i had the guys at home depot cut it for me (actually came out more accurate than i expected). then it wasnt till i got home i relized that even though i got black repti-shiled and the grain isnt gonna be seen, it will in the lower sections. CRAP!! i should have gotted oak ply.... so i fooled around with diff stains and i think i got the color pretty close

now i think we have a winner so i will do it up and ther grain wont match perfect but it will be close now to prep the new back pannels for finish
a little more rock hard for and crack and splits

sandy sandy

and stainy stainy

color check

not too bad at all i think it will pass (in this light) now for a little sealer just a couple coats of high gloss polyeurethane and good to go

now that i think about it it must have been that, that threw it off because of a final chec and i am not even close

and thats where i am at, ugh.... iam thinking of leaving it as bad as it is because of three reasons... the middle section is open but it so short and dark in there not too noticable.... the lower section is bigger and more noticeable but its closed in with doors.... on top of that i dont want to put that kind of extra time and money into this.... so at the moment i think i will leave it as bad as it is.....
so let me know what you all think so far!!
